I posed the question to myself this way: if I had the choice of playing one of my favorites again or a course I have not played, which new courses would prevail over a re-play at a favorite? I was surprised how few I came up with given how many great courses I have not played.

TOC
Cruden Bay
Sandwich
Royal Melbourne
Chicago
Crystal Downs
Merion
Fisher's Island
Sand Hills
The Old Town Club

I have played most of the courses I would want to, about 70 of the top 100 circa a decade ago.  Playing a few new entries would be nice, but not essential.  Thanks to this board, my most want to play is probably Myopia Hunt Club, for the real old time experience.  If I ever get back to New England, playing some of the other really early courses that haven't changed much would be interesting as well.  That said, walking them with a camera would be enough for me.

Of courses I've played I really can't think of many, actually maybe any, that I'm desperate to play again. There are a couple, TOC in particular, that I'd like to play with my son but that would be more as a family-experience than a golfing one (for me). It would also be a golf experience for him though.

Want
Royal Dornoch
Brora
Leven
Fraserburgh

Fishers
Chicago golf
Riviera
Crystal Downs
Ekwanok
Pacific Dunes

Scottish course will happen soon, but all but Ekwanok, and PD are probably a pipe dream.

Royal Dornoch

Pasatiempo

Err.. that's it!

Duncan's,

Our tastes must be similar.  St. George's Hill, Swinley, NB, RD, and Pasatiempo are on the list of courses I have played for which it is high bar to choose a new course over a re-play. Crystal Downs is on my list of new courses that meet that bar. The Gleneagles courses are not, but we were supposed to play both last week.

If you get a chance to play TOC with Bill, let us know when. None of us want to be on the New or Eden with that loose canon firing away. ;D

I would rather get back to some of the courses I had a ball at than try to pick off top 100 courses.

Perranporth
Tenby
Strandhill
Carne
Brora
New

Chambers Bay
Wine Valley
(the sites of Grudge Matches 1 & 2)

My desire to return or tick off a bucket list entry is inextricably intertwined with people and a specific sliver of time.

I’ve never played Crystal Downs, but a maiden voyage without DeVries or Doak would not seem right. I’d love to return to Fishers Island or Creek Club, but absent the company of Uncle George Bahto, the experience would seem lonely and empty.

Playing Spyglass without Dad always seems to miss a crucial component. Someday - if the Chinese virus ever relents - finally getting to Dornoch would scratch a severe itch, but without Brains Goodale as my docent, it will just make me sad all over again.

I desperately want to return to Cruden Bay, but only with Her Redness and Todd (oldest golf homie) on a reprise. Playing NGLA is always lovely, but without an evening on Karl Olson’s front porch with Neal, the anticipation would be tempered with a longing for the past.

The worst part is wishing the younger version of me could experience these wondrous places without a constant reminder the golf ball knows how old and weak I’ve become - and how its merciless taunts grow louder and more insistent with time.

I suppose the bucket list grows increasingly shorter with each year, with  acceptance the ships in your harbor will continue to sail out to sea, until there is only a rowboat left.

Moral of the story: Play it while you can . . . . .

Nice Gib. Not accepting an offer to play Dornoch with Rich Goodale is a great regret of mine too.

I'm inferring this was (partly) just your way of answering the question "would you rather play PVGC by yourself or the local muni with your friends?".

The problem is with every passing year, you accumulate more baggage, making a footloose jaunt to the promise land increasingly more difficult - and farther away - with each turn of the calendar.

By the time you get to an age when you can throw ballast out of the balloon and reach for the clouds, you can't take the altitude anymore - and slowly sink towards that hole in the cemetery with your name on it.

Gawd, I'm such a maudlin puke, I can hardly stand myself anymore.

My realistic bucket course list will be nearly completed next month with Forest Dunes and Sand Valley complexes.  In the area adds will be Arcadia South and Stoatin Brae.  That will bring my notch total to 500 and change. Three day window between the two complexes remains to be seen.   After that Sheep Ranch is my only "must" to keep my all Oregon courses status.
