Who is overseeing the project?  Any sense of how important it is to them to preserve/restore the Ross design?

Little interruption in play. Played as a 2some the other day in 2:45. If a green needs to be closed 15 is split into a temp green par 4 and a very cool par 3 to the green. Ask before teeing off and if no green is closed play 15 as a par 5. Amazing how much is being done with how little impact on the golfer. Kyle Franz and his crew are doing a great job in returning SP to more Ross feel.

I've got a tee time next week and they told us that the entire second hole is closed. That'll be a long walk from 1 to 3.  :)

I love Tim, but I think that "You'll have plenty of time to practice yelling Fore" deserves a "You're an idiot" rebuttal.

You might have written "well, here's what's cool about it" or "take some photos along the walk/ride" but you didn't.

Note that I have made my share of idiotic comments here and abroad, and expect that more will escape my lips in the future.

Erik has made claims that he rarely if ever hears anyone in his group yelling fore. Seemingly out of practice I wanted him to be ready if the occasion arises.

Cool.

For a variety of reasons,
the occasion doesn't arise very often (as discussed in the entirely separate topic).

There's a quick set of photos I took. You can see a lot of the renovation work already completed, and they flagged out the green expansions on many of the holes. I really, really liked Southern Pines before. The renovation will elevate its status quite a bit, from an already well-above-average spot.

Really looking forward to getting back there in a year or so.

Erik,

Great Photos! The topography at Southern Pines is already great and the renovation looks like it is going well. Looks like it may play harder as well as look much better.

I'm not nearly as well traveled as many here, but Southern Pines was already one of the "tougher" (without being "tricked up") tests of sub-6500-yards of golf that I've ever really seen. I am eager to see the final results of this renovation.

Thank you. I only wish I had a massive ladder to get some higher-up photos to show more of the work.

Looking better every day.

There’s quite a few changes/additions being made over at Pine Needles at the same time.

New waste areas added on #1 right side over the hill past bunker on right

Fairways pinched at locations on certain holes, #7 comes to mind

Big diagonal cross hazard on #10 in the lay up area

It appears that the bunkering will have what I would call a rugged look which sort of fits in with the other Ross courses with a sand base but I see that the same type of bunkering was used at Raleigh CC which has a clay base.  Are there any other Ross courses which have that rugged look to the bunkers where the base is not sand?

I walked a few holes this past weekend at Southern Pines. I am impressed and this course will give Mid Pines a run for best of the 3 once completed.

As a heads up, Southern Pines is selling a print of the new master plan, signed by Mr. Franz on their online store. I think they cost $20 shipped. In case any other fellow architecture nerds want to decorate their home offices!  ;D

Having Kyle Franz based out of Southern Pines is a nice down card for all three courses.

I agree!  I just played it and the work is fantastic.  The land and routing are wonderful.  The new bunkering is in play and great to look at.  There’s a lot of eye candy.  I’m curious how far they will get on tree removal.  It was great to have a clear view of the lake on 8.  Will that continue on 10 and 11?  They’re opening up quite a few long views and I hope they continue.  It really will be right at the top of my list with Mid Pines.

Hey - Mr. Micklesticks ~   How much access will the Mid Pines and Pine Needles members have at Southern Pines?
The greens fee will probably be higher when done if not already.

Pine Needles/MidPines memberships now include all 3 courses. I believe that part of the hoped for result of the purchase was to take some of the pressure off of MP/PN, however, I think that the 3 courses will now draw even more players and every golfer will want to play all 3. As far as rate go I can only see that member guest rates at SP are significantly less than MP/PN. I would not expect that to continue for long given the anticipated quality of the course.
As far as which is the best we will have to see the results of the SP greens redo over the summer. SP surely has a great routing. It is going to be tough to overcome the closing 12-18 at MP. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Jay-
What it is like being a member at MP/PN and now SP?  Do the members get priority over resort guests for tee times or is it the other way around?  Also, if you are a decent player is it relatively easy to get a game?  As someone who is considering moving to the area I was just curious if you are better off (all things considered) joining MP/PN/SP or PCC?  Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.  John

I am very excited to come back and play it again this year.  Last time to Souther Pines was 2015, and loved it.  Lost of movement, not 2 holes a like.   One of the most memorable tee shots I often recall was on #5.  Blind shot, fairway bends left, where I visualized the shot, thought of zero technic, but somehow hit the perfect draw.

Having just played #2, Pine Needles, and Mid Pines prior to Southern Pines, I could only imagine what some work could be like.  Now, hoping to see the new work first hand in Oct.

I may have missed this info, but is anything being done with the "ghost" nine holes that corriders remain?  Is it remaining open space/running trails.  Walking parallel to some of those holes on the back nine gives you a deeper sense of history about the place.

See you in October (if not sooner, post vaccine impulse weekend).

Played SPCC last week, renovation in progress.
Did not see any alterations to holes 3,11,12,13. #10 was closed. Right fronting bunker has been enlarged and significant tree removal left of fairway was evident.

#6: the saddest reno on the course to me. I loved how the green "grew" out of the fairway. It's much different now with the added bunker on the right. The rear left bunker is just eye candy but I was so saddened by the new approach look that I didn't look to see if the proposed green would wander toward it. It will be a postcard hole but I won't be convinced it's a better one.

#8: Prettier? Yes. Any change in strategy from the tee? No.

#9: Loved the simplicity of the bunkers on the left but a single bunker was being constructed. A bunker-shorter right-has been dug.

#15: The hole played to a temporary green in the fairway with a par three to the green to compensate for the closure of the tenth. By far, the most attractive addition to the course I saw was the cross bunker on 15. Is there a good layup to this current iteration?

I think SPCC will be more attractive but I suspect it will play harder with an increased PoP.
If anyone wants to see/post ground shots I took, let me know.

I am in Pinehurst.  Got in a round yesterday at Dormie Club and today at Mid Pines.  Have times at Tobacco Road and Pine Needles.  Found out Pinehurst no longer allows non-resort guests as walk ons on #2 and #4.  Marginally disappointed but upside is having more money for airfare just about anywhere I want to go here in North America.

Drove by Southern Pines.  I'll head out when I have time and play and explore  to see work in progress.

The reviews of Mid Pines and Dormie Club added to my experience.  I played Mid Pines twice prior to the renovation and liked it a lot.  The reworking made for a new look and feel.  Appreciate the detail in the reviews and the meticulous approach taken.
