Spotted a little spoof, well I hope so, about Bryson DeChambeau’s Colonial Tournament set make-up on social media and thought I’d share it as it seems even in spoof to say something about modern day men’s pro golf -

Given he hit 2 drives over 353 yesterday, and averaged 346, I'd say a 150 yard 53 wedge gets him on a PGA TOUR par 5 occasionally..
Imagine if he had a (modern) stock 43 degree PW?

Compliments to BDeC for the thinking and work he's put in to achieve this but is it good for the game as a whole?
Others will follow and they will be even bigger and stronger and longer.

Man he is taking some hellacious cuts with the driver.  Agree with Ian that type of speed will be an injury risk over the mid/long term.

When the distance debate was the focus on the golfing world’s attention (and how long ago does that seem?), there was talk about what would be the final straw that precipitated change.  Perhaps the new Bryson could be it. 


Can you imagine what he’d do on a dry and calm Old Course in the Open?  On how many par 4s will he be trying to drive the green - 7?  And it’s only not 8 because there’s a burn in front of the 1st.  Almost a shame we’ve got two years to wait.

Like me I know you are a rugby supporter. It is 25 years since Rugby Union went professional and the size of the players not just at professional level but also at amateur level have increased massively and it is a different game now physically. Golf could head into a similar direction so that younger players aspire to have a similar physical appearance as BDeC to gain an advantage like a baseball slugger Mike Trout for one.


The current clubs for me these days are far too forgiving and the ball is another issue. Baseball got rid of metal bats and tennis reduced the hardness of the ball. Golf may need a combo of the two and probably more quickly now than ever before.

Curious that you should mention rugby as the size and sheer physicality (a word now used regularly) of elite and near elite rugby players was in my mind while writing my post. Cricket too with how far the ball can be hit these days. I’m sure the same is applicable is other sports, or games or pastimes or leisure activities as such were once called.
Whilst there might be some sports science wizardry in concocting the most appropriate protein drink and the most appropriate amount to drink there isn’t much skill in actually lifting the glass to your mouth and pouring it in!
Bit like making chess pieces much, much, much heavier so that only big, fit, strong people can move them around the board. Kind of defeats one of the objects of the game.
Maybe it’s time to buy shares in companies that make protein drinks and the like!

And its not just that. I'd bet dollars to donuts most current NFL lineman are faster with quicker foot speed to defend than most of the past generations.  Football is the one sport more than others, where today's NFL teams would demolish the ones from 40-50 years ago.

I would say Hockey even more. Watch hockey in the 70s and then watch Ovechkin today. it is shocking. In the 70s they barely knew how to skate compared to today.
