The finest Calcutta team from each State.
« on: April 07, 2020, 05:53:09 PM »
A Calcutta team consists of an A, B, C and D player. The format is scramble and one of the highlights of every event is the auction. I have spent most of my life in Illinois so will propose a team of famous Illinois residents. Anyone who has ever played in one of these understand that the D player may not have ever touched a club in his life, or it sure looks like it.

Illinois:

A. Mike Small. Mike is both an excellent player and perhaps the finest college coach of all time. A fine Calcutta team always needs a strong captain.

B. Bill Murray. He has won the Pebble Beach pro am after all. A no brainer.

C. Al Capone. I understand he loves golf and hates to lose. He will be handling the bidding.

D. Abe Lincoln. A good conversationalist who won't ask his wife to tag along.

I like my team.

Only the A player can be a professional. Mike Small is a professional.

Why? Don't make me look your team up. I'm really busy here.

The problem with Doug Collins is that in a Calcutta you don't refuse second place money. Goalby is the best golfer ever from Illinois.

Great list. Bill Campbell was also the stepfather of Brad Dourif.

Our team invests blindly with PT for all side bets. He will let us know at the end how we did.

From (the province of) Ontario:

1. Moe Norman (as Tiger says, one of only two golfers -- with Hogan -- to ever completely own their swings.)
2. Wayne Gretzky (with great stories about his 'son-in-law').
3. Drake (or maybe 80s supermodel extraordinaire Linda Evangelista)
4. Dan Akroyd (or maybe Jim Carrey, to keep Moe comfortable)

(JK - you'll have to lose Bobby Hull, and I'll have him on mine)

B. Bill Laimbeer (Love him or hate him as an NBA player and member of the Bad Boys, the dude has/had a great golf game)
C. Gerald R. Ford (Bob Hope's favorite golfing companion and our country's 38th president. Need I say more?)
D. Stevie Wonder (Because every shot, is a blind shot. Ouch!)  ;D ;D

Louisiana - couldn't decide so I made two teams.

"A" Team:

Name / Profession / Special Skill

A) Hal Sutton / PGA Player / Practically unstoppable his first couple of years.

B) Nelson Whitney / Banker / Southern Amateur Champion from the Golden Age and former NGLA member.

C) Peyton Manning / Retired QB / Avid golfer and favorite blazer is no longer blue.

D) Lee Harvey Oswald / Assassin / Very accurate

The "B" Team

A) David Toms / PGA Player / 13 tour victories including the PGA.

B) Fred Haas, Jr. / Before turning pro / Stopped Byron Nelson's 11 win streak as an amateur.

C) Alton Ochsner / Surgeon / Operated on Ben Hogan after the accident which perhaps saved his life.

D) Louis Armstrong / Jazz Legend / Global Ambassador

I'm sorry you didn't include the namesake of a song I sang for a full day earlier this week. Davy "A.G." Crockett.

Lee Harvey Oswald elicited a quarantined laugh. I would always put money on a team from Louisiana.
