The Open, scheduled for July 16-19 at Royal St. George's in Sandwich, England, will not be played for the first time since World War II. The R&A said it will play the championship in 2021 at Royal St. George's, meaning the 150th Open celebration at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland, will be moved to 2022.
Here is a rundown of the various changes:
  • The PGA Championship, originally scheduled for May 14-17, is moving to Aug. 6-9 at Harding Park in San Francisco.
  • The U.S. Open, originally scheduled for June 16-19 at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, New York, is moving to Sept. 17-20, one week prior to the Ryder Cup.
  • The Ryder Cup, at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin, will remain in its original dates, Sept. 25-27.
  • The Masters, which was supposed to take place this week at Augusta National, is moving to Nov. 12-15.
  • The PGA Tour will move the end of its FedEx Cup playoff schedule back a week, allowing the PGA Championship to take place in early August. The Tour Championship will now be played Labor Day weekend.
The PGA Tour said it will announce other aspects of its schedule at a later time.

Wow! I will say that I am somewhat mildly surprised they rescheduled to November rather than just cancelling it this year. Let me ask those in the know this. If you're on the annual ticket list but can't attend the Master's on the rescheduled dates, do you lose your place in the pecking order and get bumped to the bottom of the wait list? I am curious as to how many ticket holders aren't going to be able to attend in November and what becomes of their ticket allotment and status? I've read stories of some ticket holders selling their Masters passes to retain their status even though they couldn't attend. I know that's frowned upon by the ANGC and you can get banned for life if caught, but certain individuals do it anyway.

Why would you lose your place if you don't attend?

I don't know, but I thought I read somewhere that ANGC had a use 'em or lose 'em policy for Masters tickets. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Do you really think The Masters is going to screw over all their longtime ticket holders over the coronavirus?

I don't think they would Tom, but it sure doesn't mean they couldn't.  The replacement list is super long, with people who would pay far far more...

I certainly would hope not. I am just putting the question out there.

So if you get hot in August/September you could have a Henrik Stenson type of finish from a couple years ago.

August
week 1 - PGA Championship
Next three weeks is the Fedex Cup

September

week 1 - Tour Championship

week 2 - off week

week 3- US Open

week 4 - Ryder Cup

Get October off to prep for Masters.  Pretty grueling August / Sept.

The decision is strangely comforting.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Green Jackets had their own in-house 'modeler' -- the Tom Fazio of epidemiological statisticians -- and have concluded that November 9-15 will be the absolute low point of the curve.
They may also be developing a vaccine as we speak, and perfecting 'tracing' technology, while simultaneously figuring out the pin placements for all 4 days to get to a -9 winning score, in the context of the different November vs April conditions.

But think of the middlemen!  The idea that you can't buy your way into a ticket to The Masters is kind of a farce.  You just don't get the privilege of coming again next time, without paying more again.

Doesn't bode well for people with… a few back surgeries.

Just think, too: someone could win back-to-back Masters in back-to-back majors.

True, Tiger would probably not be the front runner.

But going back to Rory, isn't cool weather like those temps pretty much default where he grew up?

I like the fact that weather will be a factor this year more than typical.  In all outdoor sports weather plays a big factor and some are equipped or have the ability to deal with it more than others, part of the game.  Tiger had his dominance and unfortunately he is human and when it is cold out he doesn't excel.  Tough beans, time for others to shine IMO.

Mike - The badges (tickets) for the 2020 Masters were mailed out over a month ago, so every Patron has had their badges in hand for a while now.

There is no "use them or lose them" rule. There is, however, a BUY them or lose them rule. Patrons are offered the opportunity to purchase badges each year (as a one year offer)... if you purchase the badges you are assured the opportunity to remain on their list for another year. If you don't purchase the badges you are dropped from their list and your spot is offered to the next person on the waiting list.

Thanks for clarifying, Michael. I appreciate it! Let me ask you this, are the badges (credentials) the ANGC distributes for the tournament name and or photo identifiable? In other words, say you can't attend the tournament for whatever reason, say a family emergency comes up at the last minute. Can you transfer or sell your badge to someone else or does ANGC only allow spectators in who's I.D. (name and or photo) matches that on the badge? If there is nothing identifying the badge as belonging to you, then I would suspect they could be sold online to the highest bidder without penalty.

The ownership of the badge is identifiable, but they are not restricted to who can use them. Badges can be loaned to family and friends without any issue. BUT, they CANNOT be sold or used as a prize for a contest or auction. Following is an excerpt from the T&C of purchasing badges:

Augusta National, Inc. (ANI) is the only authorized source/seller of Masters® Tickets.  Ticket(s) may not be offered for sale, sold or rented through/to third party resellers including, but not limited to, ticket brokers, travel agents, hospitality entities or scalpers.  Offers for sale, resale or other transfer of Ticket(s) for a value in excess of face value is prohibited by this agreement and also is restricted by Georgia law O.C.G.A. § 43-4B-25, et seq.  Ticket(s) may not be used for advertising or promotional purposes (such as prizes, raffles, auctions, contests, or sweepstakes).  Ticket(s) may not be sold, transferred, rented, or packaged in conjunction with any other thing of value, including hospitality services, home rental, or other products or services.  A Ticket obtained in contravention of these provisions will not be honored and the original Ticket Purchaser subject to the permanent loss of Ticket(s).

Sounds like this is the loophole.  Advertise/sell it on craigslist with a bogus account and a burner phone and if they ask questions at the gate, just tell em "we're friends"...

Kalen - no one I know would put their badges in jeopardy by trying to game the system. It's just not worth a lifetime ban for some extra spending cash.

Yes, it obviously happens as there are a lot of tickets for sale on Ebay, StubHub, etc. I'd like to know the real source of those badges as I can't imagine the average Patron risking their spot on the list that way.

Mike,

I was only trying to suggest that rules are only as good as they can be enforced.  If they were serious about thier rules, which to my knowledge is the only sporting event in the country that prohibits any resale in any form, they would check IDs at the gate.
