It's too long since you have been at a BUDA, Wardo.  Please let this happen.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I'm not overly optimistic that the UK will open hotels and allow international tourism. Our government has said that we (German citizens) should not plan to travel abroad this year.

Well,
It looks like, given the Oktoberfest is cancelled, they’ll do the same to the Cannstatter Volksfest, so we might make BUDA if it’s still on...and we’re still allowed!

The offer still stands.  If folks want to bail, I will refund the deposit. I am not envisioning a scenario where Buda will be cancelled until Julyish unless nobody wants to turn up. That said, I can fully understand folks not wanting to travel overseas and instead opt to cancel flights/not book flights.  All I ask is for folks not to wait until a few weeks prior to Buda to make their decisions.

I would have thought that golf courses and hotels will be operating again by September, together with pubs and restaurants albeit with strict rules on social distancing, number of tables etc.

Flights are another matter entirely.

No-one knows exactly what the "new normal" is going to look like but I'm certain international air travel will not feature to the same degree as it did in the "old normal".

It could be a very one-sided BUDA.   :(

Sean,
I am cancelling my reservations for hotels for the BUDA. Fearful of a lack of liquidity of the booking firms, I choose to get my refund while I can. The BUDA is still a possibility, albeit remote. I may cancel at a later date. While normal activities here are severely curtailed golf goes on with health precautions. A high point is that no buggies go out after 2:00PM. Hope all is well with all.

In the US the governors are giving fairly regular updates on when they expect to begin opening businesses, etc.  Golf courses here in North Carolina have been open with social distancing on the course and various methods of playing without touching the flagstick or taking the ball out of the cup.  I understand other states have done the same and others are beginning to allow golf courses to open.

What has been going on in the UK about projections of when golf courses will be open and what restrictions they will impose?

It's anyone's guess right now. Restrictions of only two people per group would kill foursomes and best balls. Restrictions of no larger groups or events would kill Buda outright. As would a closed clubhouse and hotel. Closed borders would make it a GB+I only event. Anything else we could live with, I suppose.

No predictions, Jerry, but the Culture Secretary and the medical officers of a number of sports are to start meeting regularly to discuss which sports can return, when and how.  An initial focus on getting some professional sport back up (likely in empty stadia and on free to air TV) but there has also been an acknowledgement that some participation sports (notably angling and golf) may be suitable for an earlier return than others.  It wouldn't surprise me to see some club golf, with continuing restrictions, in June.  But that's my guess and informed only be reading the papers and listening to what is being said.

Mark:  Am I correct that all of the UK is under a total lockdown?  Are people on the coast not allowed to go for a walk on the beach or perhaps on a golf course?  Golf is unique because it is played on such a large venue and nearly all players walk so keeping social distancing is not that difficult.  Do you think that the government might allow some activities such as golf to start up again before others?

Jerry, we're all allowed out once a day for exercise.  I ride my bike, my sons run, others walk.  If the beach is handy, you can walk on it.  I have cycled past golf courses and seen young families enjoying their daily exercise walking down fairways.  And yes, clearly we'll be playing golf again before rugby union is being played.

Fairplay I snagged a "D" in typing my senior year spring most probably because the allure of afternoons drinking beer at the stripper pit lakes was too overwhelming and Bogey we never even met Mr Bartles or James but we sure loved those 19 th American History field trips to visit Lem Motlow in situ

Jack and I are very depressed about our Buda chances. We have begun researching how to unwind this.

American Airlines would refund us if the flight is cancelled. They would credit us if we cancel. It’s kind of a weird twist.

Royal Birkdale would credit us as well for a future round. That’s pretty smarmy of them given that no rational person would make a nonrefundable round now. The time is 1510 on September 15. I can allow someone to use it. If interested let me know. I’m not looking for money.

The concerns we have are the 1) the second wave 2) possible quarantine for unwelcome Americans 2) uncertain housing.

What distresses me most is that at 70 I can’t handle this virus as a traveler.

Unwelcome Americans is not the right description of the Buda crowd! Unless you're bringing the Donald :)

The quarantine would very likely be for everyone arriving on plane, not just Americans. I cannot imagine that certain countries will be singled out, that would cause a massive political backlash. There is certainly a chance that the quarantine will be lifted by September, if infections go down. The problem is, however, that no one really knows what will happen. If you're the type, who is flexible and can make up his mind on short notice, you may very well get more done than those, who like to plan ahead.

As for age and risk groups, I have a slightly different opinion than mainstream wisdom. The chance to catch the virus is the same for all, your age and pre-existing conditions don't came into this. Whether (and indeed when) you get it is mostly determined by your behavior and a little luck. And if you get it, you have a non-trivial chance to either die or suffer longterm effects - again, no matter your age and pre-existing conditions. Too many young and healthy people have reported mid-term effects already and science has found irreparable damage to the lungs and hearts of people, who did not even have symptoms or very light symptoms. If you ask me: avoid this one like the plague. But I'm no expert, this is just a hunch.
