Neither Azinger nor Strange evidently does any homework ala Johnny Miller re: pin positions, green slope, issues with particular areas around the greens, etc. Other than saying "awesome" countless times during the broadcast, Azinger gives zero insight into the shot at hand. Strange is likewise worthless. With all their combined experience, how difficult would it be to talk about shot difficulty and execution in the heat of a US Open? I would have enjoyed Peter Kostis' swing vision analysis as to why certain shots went wide right, for example, or at least some observation as to what was wrong with Justin Rose's swing or why Tiger was coming up short and right on many of his iron shots. What was Rory doing - was it bad strategy or execution or both? It would have been helpful to discuss the differences between putting on poa and other grasses and why it can be difficult to adjust to the differences.
I did think Brad Faxon and other on-course commentators provided some interesting comments, although it was sometimes difficult to know who was making the comments.
