Why are the grandstands on #18 at Pebble so far away?
« on: June 15, 2019, 10:10:18 PM »
Not exactly golf course architecture, and barely setup. But has anyone noticed how far the bleachers and gallery are from the 18th green? What's with that?

A possibility is that, with the grandstands much closer to the green, it would change the nature of the hole.  Grandstands (temporary immovable obstructions) are attractive nuisances to professional golfers. Given a choice between the ocean on one side and a TIO on the other side the obvious solution here would be towards the TIO. In this case the organizers left a large playable area to the right of the green, which, with the tougher hole locations, would leave a short-sided play back towards the green.

Personally, I don't like the spectator bulge towards the tall cypress tree. I'd have kept the on foot spectators further back, which might add a false enticement to a wider lay-up area.

I like what they did a lot-rather than making iconic at Pebble look like 16 at TPC Scottsdale, like so many other venues do.
Let's the hole play as the hole plays rather than lots of drops out of bleachers

Reachable par five......

Lot of people in danger zone if closer to green, especially right

I wish every course did this. I hate when the grandstands are right next to the green -- they often help players who hit bad shots.

I don't think 10 yards over or 20 yards long-right would be in the danger zone. Although looking at past US Opens, they do seem to keep grandstands farther away than a normal Tour event does. Still this spacing seems really weird to me.

I think they are way more conscious than the weekly PGA Tour setup about trying to be sure the players never have an advantage hitting it in the stands.  [I can't believe how close they are telling us they'll rope things in Houston.]

On 18, if they were much closer to the fairway, you could knock it away from the water into the stands, take a drop, and make 4 pretty easily.  Instead, the stands are over so far that if you did stray there, you'd have a horrible angle and have to deal with the pine tree.  But also, mostly, no one is putting their hands on the ball on the 72nd hole.  That's gotta be a good thing.  And nobody in the stands is complaining about the view on the 18th at Pebble Beach!

Jan Vande Velde perhaps made time from his ministry of sport in France job to pay it forward and save others from the bad break of the golf century.
