USA (Final Frontier Part II) + UK
« on: June 12, 2019, 04:40:30 AM »
I can't believe nerly ten years have gone by since my Final Frontier trip to the USA. I had a fantastic time and met up with some wonderful GCAers. Some of the memories are captured here:

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,40921.0.html

I am in the midst of planning another trip to the USA (on a much smaller scale) in the fall for my 50th birthday. I would like to garner GCA thoughts on the following.

This time I'm focusing on:
- Los Angeles
- Florida
- East Coast (Orlando to NY)

A few quick Q's if I may:
- I've booked into the Streamsong Resort - which is the best course in order of the Black, Blue, Red that I should see? Why so?
- We are planning plan on doing a road trip from Florida - Georgia - South Carolina - North Carolina - Virginia - Maryland - Philadephia to NY. Which courses are a must see for a student of golf architecture ?

I would also like to try and meet a few GCAers along the way – please PM me should you like to try meet up (I will be travelling with my wife and family).

Thanks
KP

Pinehurst #2 is a must see. Depending on how much time you have since you are driving up the coast (this sounds like a very long trip) add Mid Pines.

you're doing a road trip up the entire east coast...

but want to know which of the three Streamsong courses you should see?
All of them

"Take their focus off the grass and put it squarely on interesting golf." Don Mahaffey

All 3 at Streamsong are worth playing. I like Blue best.

Going through Maryland, Baltimore Country Club (East) is the best course in the state. Let me know when you wanted to play. I should be available.

I've been to Streamsong multiple times now and I don't think that there is any real value in ordering the courses.  If you can, just play all 3 as they are all great and in my opinion, the best in Florida.

How do you possibly say that one of these is better than the other?  I wouldn't say that about just any place.  Here is just a glimpse at par 3s.

Blue

If you’re driving from Florida up the East Coast, a detour to the Chattanooga area to Sweetens Cove would be well worth your time.

On a trip from Orlando to New York along I95 a detour to Sweetens Cove makes little sense. Sayin.

Getting as far west as the NC Sandhills is a must as noted above  (Pinehurst, Mid Pines, etc). From there, I would see if you find a way onto Old Town (alas, I have been unsuccessful) and then head to Primland, Greenbrier, and Cascades. You then can cut over for Baltimore CC (helluva an offer) or to Bedford Springs before hitting Philadelphia.

If you need to stay closer to 95, let me know and I should be able to arrange a round at Hope Valley in Durham.

Hi Steve

Pinehurst #2 is on the list. Would you be in a position to recommend any accomodation there?

Thanks for the pics.

The reason I asked as sometimes one cannot see all they would like to - hence I'm keen to hear from GCAers as to which they think is best and why?

Play Rolling Green rather than walk it in the pouring rain

Hi Mayday

I will never forget that day - "pouring" doesn't describe the rain that day  "torrential" proably moreso  ;D

I appreciated you and Wayne catching up with me re: same.

Hi Tim / Chris

I don't think I will be able to get that far inland. Thanks for the recommendation though.

Thanks for your thoughts. I will have to do some research into what you suggest.

You need to do the Rolling Green/Lancaster double. This time with bright sunshine!
Let me know. You are always welcome.

I haven't seen any mention of LA. If you have private access LACC and Riviera are the best but the new Rolling Hills CC looks interesting and is near Palos Verdes CC which is one of my favs.
Publics are thin but a trip out to Rustic Canyon is worth the drive. Angeles National is a Nicklaus gem set in a canyon unique to SoCal. Santa Anita is near the horse track and fun with interesting gca.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Kevin - hard to believe it has been 10 years already.  Hope this trip is as fun for you as the last.

You'll be happy to know that my friend Mike still hits all short shots the same way...left hand only!

Hi Rory

I hope you are well?

Yes that would be nice - surely the weather couldn't be as brutal as it was. I'm still working out the logistics of the trip.

Hi Tim

Thaaks for that. I was very fortunate to see Riviera on my last trip 10 years ago. I've written to LACC - will see what happens there.

Kevin,

What does traveling with your wife and family mean in regards to golf? Are you needing pool passes?
