Would 18 at Pebble Beach be better...

...if the fairway weren't dead flat?

Asking, not suggesting.

I hesitate to suggest anything for such an iconic hole, but some movement in the fairway with the chance of a bad bounce, like many UK links courses might add some more excitement, as if the scar tee shot isn't scary enough.

It's hard to want to see bad bounces on a hole with water on one side and o.b. on the other.

But, a bit more undulation in the fairway would at least make you allow for the lie when playing the second shot, instead of just playing right down the middle.

I think it has some complexities on the right side with bunkers and the lone cypress tree now.  If you really slice one there is OB.  Add in pressure on the final hole of a tournament on a par 5 where eagle is possible or double bogey, I think it really is spectacular.  You need to hit a good drive there and the site line is pretty intimidating knowing you absolutely can't go left without a mask and snorkel.

One of the great thrills of my life was getting up there and hammering one right down the center.

It doesn't need anything else, IMO.

Dunno but I’ve long considered it to be the most underwhelming “great” hole I’ve played.

Agree, I waited my whole golfing life to hit that tee shot. Simply iconic.

No.  And lots of the fairways at Pebble are pretty flat, so contouring would seem out of place.

Seems like if someone wanted to do something about the red-headed stepchild of Pebble, they would make something of #1.  That's a muni-hole at best.

I would have said  the 15th but can't argue with #1.
