Sadness in St Andrews
« on: November 28, 2018, 06:06:42 PM »
Honestly, words fail me. I can't even begin to comprehend the decision making process behind this. Well, of course I can. Simple economics. Brand conquers all.

Is this the former location of the Old Tom Morris shop?

Yes, very sad but it is what happens when an organisation believes it is bigger than the history which led to the present day. I am hoping this is still a bit of residual ego left behind by a certain Mr. Dawson and that the new leadership will be able to rain themselves in.

Perhaps it was just about optics for tourists, specifically Yanks.

I know i would think a golf shop labeled Old Tom Morris would be touristy/gimmicky over one advertising Open swag....even if it actually wasn't

St. Andrews has morphed into Disney Golf, or as we in Fife would say, "Disnay Gowf anymore."  It's still a great place to visit for a lunch and a bit of shopping, but vis a vis golf, only a quick 11-13 holes on the Eden in the gloaming is interesting to an afficionado.....

This thread is the height of hipster snobbery.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

I thought the old lady who waved to me out the upstairs apartment had died. Perhaps her family simply cashed in.

Maybe the old shop wasn’t making money and the new one is. Plus there’s a magnificent museum not more than 100 yards away.

It’s only been a few years since the Links Trust revamped the shop amongst great heraldry along with a new line of OTM-branded clothes and other golf-related products.
Clearly, they didn’t sell as well as they expected and appear to have been quietly dumped in favour of this anodyne ‘The Open’-branded stuff.
Being a fine canny Scot, of course I understand a profit-motive, but I’m still deeply saddened at how little regard they have shown to this iconic, historic property and the legacy of Old Tom and the Morrises in general.

On a bit of a happier note:
I scrolled across the photo and found myself resting in the lovely, warming 'human' scale of it all -- rows of tightly-knit 3 story walk-ups, right up against the narrow streets of a compact and walk-able town, with nary a soaring stick box of a bank tower to be seen, and with church steeples & centuries old university buildings setting the tone instead of the sprawling shopping malls set a mile back from the jam-packed eight lane motorways dotted with drive-through take-out restaurants that characterize huge swaths of the modern day North American landscape.
As long as you can keep *that* Marty, I think you can consider yourself blessed -- especially since I'm told there are several good golf courses right there at the doorstep, right within short walking distance. Like my mentor in such things, Sean A, I've come to believe that 'greatness is over-rated'; several good golf courses is more than good enough for any good man (or woman).

It is almost the exact opposite.  Still, it's been a while since you posted something controversial and pointless just for the hell of it.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Melvyn made the papers:

Melvyn can take solace in the fact that I didn't purchase any swag while in St. Andrews. I found the entire presentation confusing and disturbing. I did however buy a fine headcover on eBay about a year later.

All golf associations think they are bigger than the members...Georgia just spent 25 mill to mess with a public course in ATL and compete with its membership instead of trying to. put that kind of $$$ into kids across the state...I say auto unions will one day have their own manufacturing...no different...

Ed,

Optics, perception, impression....all the same thing.

P.S. If the OTM shop was losing money, seems too good of a location to not make better use of....
