I can easily play with 8 clubs but usually use 9:

Driver
3W
3 Hybrid
5 iron
7 iron
8 iron (I chip and run with this club preferably but can use a 7 iron easily)
PW
LW
Putter

really interesting question;  6500 yards, 4 par 3's three par 5's
(assumed I hit green on par fours, if I missed, I hit a 60 degree from bunker or greenside chip)
1) D, 3w
2) 6i
3) D, 8i
4) D 3hybrid
5) 8i
6) D 6i
7) D, 5i, gap wedge
8) D, 7i, SW
9) 3w, 9i
10) 9i
11) D, 3H, 8i
12) D, 9i
13) D, 6i
14) D, 7i
15) 8i
16) D, 8i
17) D, 6i
18) D, 6i

Never hit PW or 4i, but some rounds I do, depending on wind and how bad I hit drive!

Hazeltine from just under 6700 yards.  Course did not seem long but my full swings used the following clubs:

D - 13
3W - 4
2H - 4
4H - 2
5I - 5
7I - 4
8I - 2
GW - 2

6I, 9I, PW, SW, LW - 0.

Just for kicks, I tried to figure out how long a course would need to be to play similarly for a tour pro.  A quick Google search came up with the following distances for Jason Day:

  https://community.taylormadegolf.com/t5/Blog/Tour-Report-AT-amp-T-Byron-Nelson/ba-p/845

The distances listed are carry distances and Hazeltine was playing firm.   I used conservative numbers 300 - driver, 280 3W, 250 - 2H, 220 4H, 185 7I, 175 8I, 135 GW

Using those numbers, I calculate Jason Day would need to play a course of around 8,525 yards to hit the same clubs I hit.

A good exercise to do Jason. Well done.
I did the same comparison a couple of years ago for myself and Dustin Johnson. Came out as I recall as him playing an 8,500-9,000 yd or so course. But, when I did it the opposite way, ie my yardage’s but his clubs when he shot a round quoted on a website with his clubbing specified, it came out at 4,800 yds or so for me!
Crazy golfing world.

At Cavendish I'm hitting short irons into a ton of greens or a 3 wood on the long holes. It means that my 5 wood & 4,5 & 6 irons don't see a lot of action. I could leave them out.

I carry 4 wedges. Unfortunately I mislaid my 52 deg gap wedge the other week.  I seem to need it on every hole!

Used all 7 that I carry. (Just recently added the 20* hyb as the seventh club)

D, 20* hyb, 25* hyb, 8i, PW, 56*W, P. (The 3 irons are all 6i length 37.5 in., 2*s upright)

Probably used the 20* hyb only twice.

Played in a state golf association Senior Stabelford event. Finished 6th in the Masters division. Field of 36.

Shot 80 from approx 5,900 yd tees, slope 130.

4 rounds at RCD and 1 at Royal Portrush -

Driver
3 wood
18 deg driving iron
4 iron
5 iron
7
9
56
Putter

I've also been thinking a lot about the story in McKellar with regards to the Japanese iron makers and the request made by the Scottish contributer who's home is North Berwick about putting together a set of custom clubs that is really like a half set that is set up only by degrees. Playing those great Irish courses last weekend really confirmed this to me. That's the way (links) golf should be played. Half set, manufacture shots and not really worry about distances. I know some people already doing this for a while.

Hi David
Do you have a link to the custom clubs?
I could have some fun with this thread... I'd say the answer as it relates to my last game is 6, but sometimes it can be a lot less than that!!

People who walk and carry with fewer than 14 clubs are doing the game an injustice. They create both an illusion and a false sense of security in the mind of the designing architect or proprietor of the course.

For example, I can play and walk any design with a single club but that does not make it walkable by any recognized measure.

 8)  I've walked with 7 clubs and 4 balls many a time in the TX heat, never considered it a badge of honor or such or reflecting on the gca, just a lighter load... practical, fun, definitely speeds up club selection, perhaps that's the greatest benefit!

Last round was at George Wright (http://golfclubatlas.com/courses-by-country/usa/george-wright-golf-course/), just a shade under 6500 yards from the tips, par 70.  There was about an inch of rain overnight before I played, so the course was playing longer than normal.

I hit my driver, 3 wood and 4 iron off of the tee.  I hit my 3 hybrid twice, once on a par 5 layup and once after the 4 iron off the tee only went about 150 yards.  Par 3 tee shots were 2 shots with 7 iron, 1 shot with 8 iron, and 1 shot with 9 iron.  I had 1 approach shot each with my 5 iron and my 6 iron.  The rest of the approach shots were with a variety of 7 iron down through 58 degree wedge.  Don't ask about how many times I used my putter.

Some of my approach shots were different than normal because of the wet conditions, but I will probably still use every club in my bag on that course.  If I don't use a club, it's typically one of the following: 3 hybrid, 4 iron, or 5 iron.
