Curious to see the contrast with the recent post on what the pros use.

For me, I played a 6200 yard par 70 course with 5 par 3s.  It’s super wet in DC, so most of my drives are like 235 and splat.   I hit a 7 iron 165 flat out and am currently a 1.7 handicap.

After each round I play, I usually think back through my shots to see if there were any clubs I didn't use. Generally I've hit them all at least once. If I haven't hit one, it's usually my 4 or 5 iron.

Interesting question. I used 11 clubs. Did not hit 5, 6, or 7 irons. It is fascinating that I did not have any shots for those clubs. Says more about my tee shots than course design.

Jason, of course you don't use longer clubs. You are a young strong buck.I wear out my three and five wood and hybrids.

I recall watching Big Break years ago for 50+ guys looking for an exemption at a Senior Tour event.


One of the players, who went quite far in the competition, was a magician with all the different shot types and lengths he could hit with the same club. He was the funnest one to watch to see what he would try next.


Seems like the PGA tour would be far more entertaining if they limited them to say only 8 clubs in the bag. To boot, think of all the extra strategy needed just deciding what to put in the bag that day...

Last round - Hershey East - Par 71 6600 tees. Hit 13 of 14 clubs in the bag on the way to an 81. Surprisingly the 9 iron was the one club I did not hit.


When I play Hunt Valley CC (Ault-Clark 1970) in Maryland I seem to rarely hit the middle of the bag. On a normal round from the 6500 yard tees I’ll hit no 8 irons, one 7-iron and one 6-iron.


The 5 threes comprise the 7 and 6 iron shots and three that play 190+. The fours are either driver->wedge or driver->5 iron+. Four of the 5 par fives are reachable with the fifth leaving no more than 8 or 9 depending on the lay up. Took me a while to realize this and I do find it interesting.

I played Crystal Downs with two guests today.  White tees - by coincidence, about 6200 yards.  The report:


Driver on 12 holes (all long holes except 7th & 17th)
4-wood 6x (2nd app, 8th 2nd shot, 13th app, 16th x2, 17th drive)
4-iron 2x (once trying to hit under a tree)
5-iron 5x
7-iron 2x
8-iron not used
9-iron 2x
PW 4x


I also played three bunker shots with the PW and chipped with 5,7,9 and PW.


Hit 7i, 5i, 4i and 9i on the four par-3's


Note I was only carrying nine clubs including my putter.  Never really wished I had 6i or SW - maybe once or twice I wished I'd had a hybrid.

My standard home round last week. Par 71 6500 yds.

Somewhat atypical distribution here - went for a par 5 in two, hit it O.B., proceeded to drop one and hit the green in 4... easy 6. Often I'll go to the 4 iron to layup on that hole and hit every club in the bag funny enough.

Gotta work on proximity to the hole from <150.

I am impressed by how many people don’t carry 14 clubs.


If I added it up right so far,  the least used club so far is a 5 iron.  Most used is Driver.  And roughly half of approaches are with 7-iron or less.  Average course length is around 6400 yards.

I carry 5 wedges and hit them all during my last round at Trinity Forest. W, 50, 56, 60 and 64 deg. Also used everything else but my 8 iron. Being: Driver, 3 and 5 woods, 5, 6, 7 and 9 irons. Oh Putter.

Neat question, I've rarely thought of a round in those terms. Par 71, 6500 yards - but only played the front 9.

Huh, that's interesting, because pretty typical for me on my home course I think: Didn't use a 3W at all; didn't use a 3, 4, or 6 iron at all; and used a 5 only twice.
I can see maybe why sets are changing: judging from this exercise I could go:
1W, 5W/2H, 6-PW, SW, and maybe add a lob/gap wedge.

I currently have 11 because I bought some wedges and am still trying them out.  I will likely only carry the 60 degree on parkland type courses.  I try to avoid using the borrowed 3W because I can hook the shit out of it, but sometimes ya just gotta have a go.

While I was carrying 13 for this round it was an oddity, as I typically only carry 9 or 10 clubs.

Apologies for not knowing this, but how much different are the 4-5 woods than hybrids? I can't hit any of them, while I'm ok with 2-3-4 irons. I'm weird like that....
