This seems more like the Yellowstone Club, without the golf focus - they were buying luxury properties all over the place, and it did not turn out well at all.  There are other high end groups that bought up luxury properties all over the world, and then essentially time-shared them.

It takes a ton of capital to buy up the properties and probably difficult to get traditional financing.

Could be interesting if the architecture of the courses is good enough, and in locales that you would like to visit.   Also, if the cost is not prohibitive.

Trouble is they don't have very many interesting courses. Other than Davenport and Broadmoor (Indy) there aren't many I get excited about. They had Pete Dye GC but its gone.

Are there any you like Buck that I'm overlooking?

I haven't played Broadmoor and live a couple hours away is it worth the drive?  As Philip said with ClubCorp you go where you are going and see what's there.  To me this is the better model.  If I'm making a golf trip I'm going for great courses or good and convenient.  I've only played Dormie and Ballyhack and while nice they aren't courses I'm planning a trip around and aren't in locations that I find convenient.

There are some ClubCorp places I've enjoyed.
I am about to move away from Dayton and lived on Dayton CC which I enjoy.  Locally Traditions down near Cinci is pretty nice as well.
I've considered making a weekend trip to Omni Bedford but didn't make it happen.  Each year I took trips up to Firestone and really like the front 9 on the west.  A lot of people like the North.

I liked Saddle Creek, in the Stockton market (if nearby).

If you want to make a trip, heading to Atlanta, Palm Desert or Toronto give loads of different options.

I get they are totally different models and I guess that is the point Wade is making.  I do wonder if it will work out for Dormie Network.  It's not a model I'm particularly interested in.

Well there is a charity auction for a 1 year membership to the Dormie Network right now on Charitybuzz.com for all those wanting to try it out.  No bids yet although the estimated value is 29k!

Good luck and support a charity while enjoying our game.

Not sure how many are going to begin the bidding at $5000. My dues are less than that.

Enough with the advertising. Better donate the "commission" to charity.
Let's talk about hole #10 at Dormie. Not the "business" model.

Played Dormie 4-5x...can’t immediately place #10...nor #9, for that matter...not good.

REALLY long par 5. Wetlands left. Pretty much a forced carry 2nd shot.
Principals nose in 2nd/3rd shot zone. Something just doesn't work. Distance?
9 is a good little par 3 with a fun green complex.

Unless you are really short or way right the shot over the marsh isn't all that difficult. The principle's nose is more problematic. It took one play to figure out that it wasn't a difficult hole. From what I understand Bill Coore is making the fairway a bit wider to the left off the tee.

Down the hill into the woods??

At +/- 647 from the back and 605 from the regular tees, over a 100 yd wide marsh area to a principals nose guarding an ever narrowing fairway, I understand why you would think it not a difficult hole.

With this new perspective perhaps you can provide insight into the best strategic play on the 11th other than a 300 yard drive over the top of the hill.

I really like Dormie except for a few holes that missed the mark. All in all it has the most diverse set of greens in the Sandhills.

Eleven is just plain hard for me. I play it a 395 yards it is still all I can handle. I try to keep the ball left even though I want to hit it down the right side. I try to feed the ball onto the green from the left side of the green. If I fly it all the way to the hole I can't keep it on the green. I find that true of a lot of the holes. I don't hit the ball high enough or with enough spin to hold some of the greens.

The hole that gives me the most fits is the short 14th. I have no idea how to play that hole even if it is only about 300 yards. I generally end up long or to the right of the green.

The addition of Victoria National was officially announced in Virginia today.  Folks in Indiana have known for a few week

I believe that you announced this on August 18 at the beginning of this thread. Are you on commission?

Sorry, Jay, I'm not.

Simply failed to read my own first post.  I thought I left VN off the list, since the announcement hadn't been made here in Virginia.  Dumb mistake, and I've deleted the repeat post.

Apologies for the oversight.

Really just looking for some discussion/insight/response regarding Victoria National.

Dormie Network released a sketch of a new clubhouse at Dormie Club today. Looks pretty awesome! Construction to start in the next few months.

Sounds great - have they actually done anything yet - any work done on the course such as the bunkers or the tee boxes?

Jerry:

Mr. Coore has spent time on site and I understand that work on the golf course will commence in 2019.

Jerry ~ The day I was there last year Bill Coore was there for ongoing recommendations that haven't been carried out for some time. As far as work that has already been started;
~I saw on IG they have started testing new materials for cart paths.
~ They had a real problem with washouts which have been improved with maintaining better standards and they have also added drainage.
~ They already started adding tee boxes. They are adding about 1,000 yards to the course to keep the course in line with equipment advancement and make it playable for all skill levels.
~ I saw in another IG post they decided to add all new equipment (think they went with John Deere) network wide.

Upcoming Improvements
~ About to break ground on new maintenance facility
~ Bunkers will be started this winter. Improving drainage and play ability throughout them and also getting them back to original design per Bill Coore as some of them have been altered due to weather and washouts over time.
~ Then of course new club house as I mentioned in last post.

** Forgot to add they already started removing trees. The plan is to remove close to 10k trees!

Lots of maintenance improvement projects this year including replacing all collars

What bunker work would you think needs to be done?

Victoria has been hemoraghing local members including myself lat year. They may be adding some as well but i do not know of them. And maybe that is ok for the Dormie Club model. I do not know what they would need to add or alter

I can't imagine why they would need to add 1000 yards to the course unless they think they can get a PGA Championship or US Open there -- and I don't think there's any way that course has room for the stands, people movement, etc. that they would need for such an event.

Seems like an absolute waste of money to have a 7800 yard set of tees out there.
