Played Pelican many times.  It's walking distance from my house.  Still like the Belleair pair better but rather bias......

How much has changed from the Belleview Biltmore days? I know they took out the par 3 8th.

Bump, Just curious if anyone has played Pelican Golf Club? I watched a little on TV this weekend and would like to hear how the course is in person.

On a side note, It's painful to watch Lexi putt from short distances..............

Rob-I thought about starting a thread regarding Lexi but felt her travails were off topic. That said for all her accomplishments she has an incredibly tough time making short putts when she needs them most. Another layer of scar tissue was heaped on this weekend.

Yup, It's got to be really in her head at this point.

I'm amazed  I can't find anyone who has played this course.....

Played Pelican in January (impressive conditioning, and a great experience, I enjoyed the golf course, but I had never played the original to compare it to), and then talked my way through the gate at Belleair to take a look around a little bit.  I have been meaning to reach out to you sometime when I am down there again Jonathan.

I had to assuage my disappointment at not having played or getting to play Belleair that day by purchasing one of your books...

I was a volunteer at the LPGA Pelican event this week. I haven't played the new course but got to see it up close. Other than the playing corridors, there is not much left of the Belleview Biltmore iteration. The new greens are bigger and have a lot more movement. Bunkers are almost all, if not all, new. The players had to be extremely precise with approach shots. The wind made approaches play even harder for those who went out at windier times.  Lexi wasn't the only one who had putting problems at Pelican, although she was the most well known. The changes near the top the leaderboard on Sunday reflect those with steel nerves on the green. The last two holes made for a great finish. The 17th can be a long or a short par 4. On Saturday it was drivable and could be played lots of different ways. They lengthened it a bit on Sunday (Nellie tripled it and lost the lead, only to gain a tie on 18). I didn't have an opportunity to photograph the course. Here's a link to photos of whjen it was the Bellview Biltmore   https://www.flickr.com/photos/golfcoursepix/albums/72157681856377840

I watched the replay of the event of Golf Channel and got a chuckle as the announcers kept referring to the course as a 100 year old Donald Ross design and the club as if it was the original Pelican Club.

Thanks Stewart, the whole transformation from Belleview to Pelican was weird. Its was a course I really grew to love and there were some shady shenanigans reported in the paper. Not sure how that eventually played out. For an area that doesn’t have a lot of good accessible golf courses for the public it was a huge loss imo.

First golf course I ever played was the old Airco if you remember that. Not to far from Pelican.

There is zero Ross remaining at Pelican.  It's a modern golf course overtop of the old Ross.  Every grain of soil and blade of grass is new.  As stated above Augusta conditioning and upscale services are what you'll remember playing the Pelican.  (The food is excellent as well, both at the Bistro and the main dining room.)

Jonathan,
Did they do anything to hide the houses? Berms or anything like that. I remember one corner of the property across the road had older condo's and a commercial building bordering the course.

Not really - no attempt to hide the houses..  Same houses surround the perimeter of the course - just like they did before.  Not much they can do about them.  The house don't come into play and are not overly imposing, which is the main point.  They did buy a few of them up south of the clubhouse and built three overnight group accommodations (The Tillinghast, Ross and MacKenzie Houses!).

Was the Par 5 along the intercostal on the west renovated in the last few years?

Not yet.  Work starts in March.  That par 5 will now be a par 4 and a peninsula par 3 jutting out into the water.
