Cool list, Tim -- 'old school' from before the invented the term! Those Hollywood GC type courses are for me -- the inland GB&I in (almost) my own backyard.

Peter-Bass Rocks is an incredible throwback replete with blind shots, stone walls, chocolate drops at times flanking the lines of play and occasionally right in front of a green acting like a lions mouth feature depending on the pin placement. The wind blows steady off the Atlantic and the course plays longer than the card yardage of 6000 yards. The greens are seamlessly tied into teeing areas and although there have been a few routing changes it is an exceptionally fluid walk which affords at least a glance at the Atlantic from close to half the holes with the dual lighthouses as the backdrop. I can’t remember when I have had more fun.

Terrific picture you paint there, Tim - as i assume you intended, with a few small word changes, it could describe any number of GB&I courses. I didn't know Bass Rocks at all, so I went to look it up...ah, Herbert Leeds. Yes, of course...

So far quite interesting:

Promoted peace in the Middle East with Schulzie and Clasby in January.
Froze my butt off in NL during Feb-Mar
Quick visit to Japan and Korea in April to visit some friends, see Yokohama renovation and revisit a couple classics.
Last week made my maiden voyage to South West England and was absolutely thrilled about the courses there way over exceeding my expectations.

This was lead by St. Enodoc which I absolutely loved. Englands oldest course in Westward Ho. West Cornwall, Perranporth and Bude & North Cornwall were a triumphate of old school quirk the last winning the award for the course I've seen with the most blind tee shots followed by the most blind approaches. A must see for anyone that loves to use the force to guide you through your round.

Lovely visits to Trevose that Ebert & Makenzie have been working on and Saunton East & West as well.

Finally a rare get-together with Mr. Arble where he shared his love for the excellent Burnham & Berrow. He pulled out all the straws with benign conditions and shorts weather.

The year progressed nicely with a very busy few months of hosting people in The Netherlands. I guess the word is officially out!

I managed to see the following courses as well:

Broekpolder
Hoge Kleij
Links Valley - new reversible course from Frank Pont
Royal Limburg - Houthalen
Utrecht De Pan - 4x
Noordwijkse - 3x
Royal Hague - 4x
Hilversumsche Golf Club - 1x
Kennemer Golf & Country Club - 1x
Waverley CC
Columbia Edgewater
Gamble Sands - 3x
Gozzer Ranch
Wine Valley
Sleepy Hollow
Sunningdale NY (walked/rode only)
Portmarnock
Royal County Down - 3x
Santapazienza - 5x
Boa Vista
San Fernando (Sao Paulo)

2 trips left and the year is finished.

I've been able to get in some get good golf in the few months since I returned to the game.

White Bear Yacht Club
Northland Country Club

for the Midwest Mashie. I wish I could play them now as my game has started to come around to the point where I could enjoy them even more.

Sand Valley
Mammoth Dunes
Sandbox

Big fan of the resort. Definitely prefer Sand Valley. Found it more interesting. Will have to return for the new Doak course and play Sandbox when I don't have to hit off a mat. Maybe I should consider the Wisconsin Par 3 Tournament.

Coming up

Mid Pines
Pine Needles
Southern Pines

when I visit my dad over Thanksgiving. He doesn't play anymore but I'm going to everyday I'm there.

I played only about 12 rounds.  However, my highlights included Whistling Straits, Brookside Canton, Scioto, and my unicorn: Camargo.   Plus, I got to play a round with my daughter, who has picked up the game at age 12 and also joined her school golf team.  So even with less than 20 rounds, I had a very good year, as I define it.

I’ve taken two excellent golf trips this year.  The first trip was to Philly with some friends from St. Louis.  We played Aronimink, Gulph Mills and White Manor and I limped around Applebrook without playing as my knees were shot after walking 36 the day before (AGC and GMGC are rather hilly).  I just returned from a trip to London where I met up with friends, including a GCA participant and played Sunningdale Old (x2), Sunningdale New and Wentworth West, which I found surprisingly enjoyable.  I stayed at Wentworth and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and food.  Speaking of food, we had the privilege of a table at Hide in Mayfair (Above) with the tasting menu and phenomenal bottles of wine, courtesy of their wine buyer.  They have been open for just 6 months or so and have already earned a Michelin star.  Highly recommended!  I flew out of Philly to LHR and had time to play Merion West and witness all the work being done on the East course...can’t wait to see it next spring!

Here in St. Louis, I attended the PGA Championship at Bellerive, despite the crappy weather and captained our Westwood CC team to second place in our Interclub Match at St. Louis CC.  The home team dominated with Bellerive and Old Warson in a distant third and fourth place respectively.  My knees are not holding up very well and I’m looking at stem cell injections and then, ultimately, total knee replacements.  We’re completing a course renovation and complete bunker work (BBB) at Westwood and should be good to go for next golf season.

I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

David, One day only on the way to Norway. Royal Hague was closed for maintenance and our visit to De Pan a year ago featured borrowed clubs thanks to KLM, so we wanted to play it this time with our sticks. It was a great day. Love De Pan.

Every year my tastes lean more toward smaller clubs with interesting terrain, simple green keeping, a wild hole or two and cheaper green fees.  Of course, there are many notable exceptions, but as they become more expensive I slowly lose interest. I want to simplify my golf and over recent years have come to realize that greatness is over-rated. Yet, there are some courses such as North Berwick which will be compelling regardless.

My interest in golf course architecture came relatively late so my wife and my "big" vacation is particularly important for exploring and learning.  This year was our first trip to Scotland and London.  We played:  Golspie, Brora, Royal Dornoch, Nairn, Castle Stuart, Swinley Forest, St. George's Hill, and Woking.  The Highlands met all expectations and more.  Ran's description of Brora in the 147 Custodians is spot on, and I have posted elsewhere falling in love with Golspie.  The surprise was how friggin great the Heathlands are--sure, I read the reviews and the threads here--but as a uneducated US guy, all I remember hearing about the UK is links, links, and more links.  We hope to go back to the Highlands, but will most definitely return to the Heathlands.

The other surprise I covered in a recent thread was walking Mid Pines and Pine Needles on our annual trip there while my wife and our friends played (pulled a muscle).  Just a great way to really appreciate the architecture.

Our rounds at Hope Valley capped a most educational and enjoyable year.

Thanks again to all of you who gave such generous advice on courses, restaurants, and sightseeing.

Got to play Pinehurst CC in Denver last week, which is Press Maxwell, and was very enjoyable. Was surprised at how hilly it was actually; some really cool uphill approaches.

Jim Urbina just put in a new putting facility which looks amazing.
