Gairloch...the course that most embraced my reasons to play some golf in Scotland.  Brings a smile every time I think of it.

I've played a lot of super diverse golf this year.

I'm on a mission to play as many new golf courses in NZ as possible, which means a lot of very rustic golf (i.e., total annual budget of $20,000) mixed in with some interesting international courses. Absolutely loving the rustic kiwi golf which has been the catalyst for getting back into playing lots again.

Culverden (South Island, NZ - saw one guy mowing the fairways but nobody else during my round)
Hawarden (South Island, NZ - didn't see another person the entire round)

Hikurangi Golf Club (Northland, NZ - hidden gem)
Huapai Golf Club (Auckland, NZ)
Trinity Club (Seoul, Korea - like nothing I've seen before in terms of opulence)

Just played my 44th round on my 32nd course of the year. My favorite new (for me) courses were Lookout Mountain, Cabo del Sol, and the Warren Course. Seen a lot of interesting places and played with some great people. Playing some of the best golf I have in a while, and while the 'cap is still hovering around 5, I'm at the exciting point where it feels like everything's about to come together.

As for the rest of the year, enjoying summer in MN and seeing some of the Twin Cities clubs I've missed so far. Mashie in August, hopefully some fall tourney golf in Indiana.

2 rounds at Palma Real in Ixtapa Mexico in January
4 rounds at Chechessee in March
2 rounds at Mammoth Dunes, 1 round at the Sandbox and the back nine at Sand Valley in May, and
2 rounds at my home track in Chicago after the awful spring weather we've had and too much time at work.

Not sure how many rounds but highlights include:

-Pac Dunes/Bandon Dunes (with my wife, which was awesome)
-First Dye Course (La Quinta Mountain Course)
-Pronghorn (Nicklaus)

On the schedule are
-Pasatiempo
-Gamble Sands
-Ballyneal
-Common Ground

Best golf moment this year was watching my 10 year old close out his first PGA JR League match last night on the final hole at Oregon Golf Club. I was happier than he was.

In February I spent three days at Bluejack National, my first visit.  What a fun golf course with great green contours and fast turf conditions, even though Texas got a lot of rain in February.

In March I was in California and saw Pelican Hill North.  Great resort and a beautiful spot.  I'll leave it at that.

In April I attended the Thursday tournament round of The Masters with my brother.  It was my first time on the property.  Just a fantastic experience from the moment you enter the gates until you drive off the property.  Unbelievably, my brother won the tickets in the lottery.

In late April I made my second visit to Prairie Dunes and stayed three nights on site.  I love everything about Prairie Dunes, especially those greens and the green sites.  It's a masterfully crafted golf course.

The rest of the year should be comparatively quiet.  In July I'd like to drive up from Chicago to Sand Valley and play both courses.  I was at Sand Valley last year and the entire facility is spectacular.  The rest of the year will be local golf in and around Chicagoland.

Just back from four gloriously sunny days of foursomes in Wales which was the unquestioned highlight of the year so far. Harlech and Aberdovey were both, in their different ways, in tip-top condition (the bunker problem at RStD seems, finally, to have been resolved for which great credit is due to Rhys Butler, although the shells of the old hotel and college tower block still remain) and Aberdovey, in particular, was running truly fast on and around the greens. So was Borth, although the oldest club in Wales is clearly facing tough times, despite a splendidly 'can-do' membership: in contrast the general sense of prosperity in and around the town of Aberdovey (rather unusual on Cardigan Bay)  comes across at the Aberdovey Golf Club itself. There is a new back tee at 16 at RStD with the most stunning views of the Bay (echoing that the ordinary tee enjoyed when I was a child, prior to the advent of the new dune line) which has got to be one of the more spectacular in Wales. Anyway, this trip was confirmation (again) of Bernard Darwin's view of Wales as the best (and certainly the best value) place for a golfing holiday.

Otherwise there has been a foray into Sussex, which I wrote up elsewhere on GCA, and some lovely, if wet days at Swinley, Porthcawl, Lindrick, Tadmarton and Huntercombe. Woking in the sunshine last month was a joy, although I remain unconvinced by the newish 16th green. The year to come brings a return to Wales, and (most excitingly) Askernish and TOC later in the summer, with the Lothians again in the autumn. So lots of anticipatory pleasures: as for the game itself, my driving and short game has been as consistently decent as my putting has been consistently execrable, making my mid-handicap status entirely appropriate. I would love to be even a couple of shots better and aspire to threaten twelve again...

I've been really fortunate over the years to play my fair share of golf and different golf courses (1,083 courses to date) but so far 2018 has really been pretty much of a washout for me golf-wise, literally and figuratively, due to work demands and horrible weather in eastern PA this year..

Sitting here in mid-June I've only been able to get out to play golf a total of 14 times, to date.    On one of those we were rained out after six holes.   On a few of those days I was able to play multiple courses including one day with 3 short nine holer courses in south Jersey.   Here are the courses I've played so far grouped by when I played and multi-course days are grouped together.  I've also listed whether the course was new or a replay;

Karakung (PA) (replay)

Winter Park (FL) (new)

Mission Inn (El Campeon) (FL) (new)
Deltona (FL) (new)

Southern Dunes (FL) (new)

Avalon (NJ) (replay)
Pines At Clermont (NJ) (new)

Atlantis (NJ) (replay)

Laguna Oaks (NJ) (new)
Heritage Links (NJ) (new)
Ocean City (NJ) (new)

Hooper's Landing (DE) (new)

Rich Maiden (PA) (replay) (scramble)

Mountain Laurel (PA) (replay) (6 hole rainout)

Skytop (PA) (replay) (played in the rain)

Country Club of the Poconos (PA) (replay)

Ridge At Back Brook (NJ) (replay) (scramble)

I've got some catching up to do!

After back surgery last year, this year has been a return to fun.  No keeping score anymore, enjoying every moment of the walk, the golf and company I'm with.  As usual I have met some spectacular people this year through golf and look forward to more of the same.  I've also refined by 10 club bag, and look forward to shouldering my MacKenzie bag every time I get out.

Torrey Pines - South - kind of a slog
Torrey Pines - North - refreshing and fun green complexes
The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe - neat green complexes
Barona Creek - enjoyable and fun to walk and play
LACC - South - fantastic little brother to the North
The Saticoy Club - Tough tough tough.  Had to reload from my car at the turn!
Rustic Canyon - genius low cost course
Riviera - if only I were a member, in a few years I could learn to chip off the Kikuya
Ballyneal - 3 days of solid bliss
Salt Lake CC
**Back to Ballyneal next week and I can't wait!!

It’s been a really good year so far - starting with an unexpected round on TOC in February (I rolled up at 9am on a Saturday morning hoping for a game on the New or Jubilee and was on the first tee of the Old half an hour later), and already including five other World top 100 courses (Sunningdale New and Old, Walton Heath Old, Castle Stuart and St George’s Hill).  Add in my first experiences of Formby, WH New, Huntercombe and Boat of Garten as other highlights - and a few others as well - and I certainly can’t complain!

I have been extremely fortunate this year.

Business took me to California and I was able to play SFGC, Pasatiempo, Cypress Point, LACC, Porcupine Creek and Thunderbird.

The company was every bit as good as the courses, and to top it off I was able to visit Callaway's fitting facility in San Diego and have a full tour experience fitting.

In the UK I have hosted some wonderful people and continue to enjoy sharing my home club.

I have been to a number of places in Ireland and not played at all - just seen Portrush. To say that that was frustrating is an understatement.

Even so, off to play Scarborough North Cliff, Scarborough South Cliff, Ganton and Sandmoor starting tomorrow.

Wallasey in July.

Isle of Harris, Stornoway, Ullapool and Golspie in August.

Overall, my golf is improving and I can say that I am enjoying every game. Long may it stay that way.

It has been a weak year for golf with a worse year to follow. However, there have been a few bright spots. I have been at Fort Leavenworth outside of Kansas City for the past 12 months and the immediate area is not exactly a golf hotspot. I will be leaving for a year in golf purgatory in Kuwait in July and am already dreading the heat...but am looking forward to working a great job.

Three highlights:
1. I walked onto Swope Memorial last week for the first time and was blown away by the quality of design, conditioning, and friendliness. Being in the military, I have been able to play all over the country and Swope Memorial contends with Rustic Canyon and Lawsonia (Links) for the best golf at the cheapest price I have found. $28 to walk at 07:00 on a Wednesday! While in Wisonsin in 2016, I played Sand Valley during preview for $100. While I knew I was playing a special course, the cost (cheap considering current green fees) lessened my experience and I knew I would not be able to play it again. In contrast, I am checking my calendar to figure out when to play Swope again. It is good I found it late in my academic year as my studies would have suffered if I spent as much time there as I want now. Hands down the best hilly course I have played.

2. I played in a Veterans Day tournament at the Country Club of Kansas City and regardless of some horrible weather, it was a great day. I played with a father and son-in-law duo and was paired with a Colonel from the UK. We played poorly but had a great time. Moving every 12-24 months prohibits me from joining a club but I was reminded of my time when I was a youth playing member events back home.

3. Firekeeper GC is about an hour west of base and it is a solid course with some great holes. Golf in a natural setting without McMansions determining the routing is an increasingly rare experience for the public golfer. This is the third Brauer designed course I have played (Giants Ridge Legends & Quarry), and I will seek out more as the variety of holes and demands on the golfer are great.

Not bad so far other than the weather. I actually think if I lose some more weight and keep riding ,walking , stretching might shoot a few rounds in the 60's .

Of course there that putting issue after 40 lol🤓😡

18 Rounds

Highlights include three rounds at the newly renovated Seth Raynor designed Dedham Country and Polo Club, a round at CB MacDonald's Mid Ocean Club, and two rounds at the undisputed king of off the beaten path sleepy gems Roaring Gap Club designed by Donald Ross. I also made a trip down to Streamsong and played 2 rounds at Red and Black and one round at Blue.

Favorite hole stretches would be 15-18 at Mid Ocean, 14-18 at Roaring Gap, Streamsong Blue 4-7, Black 2-9, Red 7-9, and 6-8 at Dedham.

I'll be moving from Boston to Indiana this fall so I'm going to try to check as many golden age designs off the books this summer.

Just got much better after Scotland trip with TOC x2, New Course, Kingsbarns, and North Berwick.  I haven't practiced at all, so I don't expect good scores, but shot 83 at Kingsbarns as a 16 handicap which was very good for me and exceeded my expectations.

It is so hot here now that I shut it down in the summer in KSA.  I'll be back in the states for much of July and some of August where I have lined up some very nice rounds with my dad and brother (all charity auctions rounds).

July
Cape Cod National
Essex County Club - Boston
Plainfield CC
Galloway National
Hamilton Farm

Sand Valley and Lawsonia with Dan Moore

August
Ballyneal
Prairie Dunes
Dismal River

Need some lessons and practice time for sure!  Although I suspect most of us can say the same.  I don't get too perplexed by my score for I just enjoy spending time with my dad and brother.

God bless.

The past month has been good. I played the biggest surprise on the upside of my golfing life this year, The Bridge. It was so much better than what I anticipated. Also played Davenport and Cedar Rapids CC which were both outstanding as were our hosts. Not to mention Piping Rock and Beverly were outstanding as well.

It most certainly has the coolest vibe of any club I know. I loved racing as a kid and it just brought back a ton of cool memories. The racing theme throughout the club is really neat. It is very laid back. The golf course is vastly improved (from what I have been told). Tees are ground level instead of elevated and that makes the walk all that much more enjoyable.
