New Facility Question / Cost
« on: May 11, 2018, 07:13:49 PM »

Hoping there might be a person or two around here with some experience/expertise in designing/building a new golf practice facility - either as the contractor, owner, or board member - and would be willing to share their experience with me.

Not much more than a thought at this point - but our campus has recently purchased quite a bit of land - much of it perfect for a 15-20 acre golf practice facility, AND I've been promised that if we can raise the money, we can have some land to build it on.

Our development people asked me to reach out to some folks who might have an idea how much we would have to raise to have a modest, maintainable facility with a couple practice greens, practice bunkers, and a range. I reached out to two architects, both of whom post semi-regularly on this board, and was either big-leagued because they do not see a potential job, or no one pays attention to their public email address on their respective websites.

Took my team to play Valhalla back in October and was impressed with the elegant design and functionality of the little practice area down by the 1st tee. As I recall, there was an ample range area, and very close by, a large bunker separating two large greens that each had their own mown-down/fairway area from which just about any short-game necessity could be practiced. Nothing terribly elaborate, but highly functional and perfect for what we need.

So I suppose I need to ask if anyone has seen this area at Valhalla, and, if so, any idea what a ball-park figure would be necessary to achieve something comparable?

Kevin,

Maybe reach out to Kurt Bowman who could give you a ballpark or perhaps Jim Lipe who not long ago reworked the facility at Colleton River in SC. They would be a good start at the least. Both are members of this site but post infrequently.

Stanford has arguably the best practice facility in college golf. You could contact Jay Blasi who has built it and then rebuilt it when the university wanted to move it.

The University of Illinois has an outstanding facility.  The indoor facility was designed by an architectural firm.  The outdoor facility, which is outstanding and allows players to replicate almost every type of shot they will experience, was designed by GCA's own Jeff Brauer (an Illini alum) with consultation by Steve Stricker (also an Illini).  I would contact Jeff,  Happy to talk at your convenience as well.

I.L.L.I.N.I   !!!!    Although I'm a Iowa alum I still consider Illinois, U of I!  Now we have to get the football  and basketball team going to where the golf team is.

Baylor just built a facility by campus and the golf coach is a nice guy who can tell you what we did. Seems like maybe the Whispering Pines guy did it but I am blanking out. It could give you some current pricing. I think they built 3 holes with it.

Kevin: Shoot me an email (mfrey@pgamagazine.com) and maybe we can set up a time to chat. The company I work for owns and runs the Golf Range Association of America, and I may be able to provide you with some information and leads that may be helpful.

Kevin,

Xavier funded a cracking indoor PF and created a targeted outdoor hitting area mostly for iron shots at Maketawah Golf Club in Cinnci.

Coach Brian McCants email is mccantsb@xavier.edu. I am sure he will be a good resource.

Cheers
