Re: Par fives the most difficult holes to design?

I simply did the math on your comparison of a 190 yard approach (which would require a 280 yard drive) and the 100 yard approach. That would suggest that a 280 yard drive was not only possible, but likely.

Fair enough.

The few guys who can hit a 280 yard drive are likely to be the same guys who fancy their chances of hitting a 190 yard approach to a well protected unreceptive green. Good luck to them. Attacking golf should be rewarded when executed well.

It shouldn't however, be the only way of playing a hole and scoring well.

A 200 yard 3-wood, a 180 yard hybrid, followed by a 100 yard pitch is just as valid a way of playing the same hole with less risk. Still a decent chance of a birdie, too.

Did I mention my eagle at the 538 yard 7th at Reddish Vale last week?
Driver, 19 deg Hybrid, 9 iron.  It didn't even bounce - landed flush in the hole!  ;D

Now that's a great par 5!!
