OT - How about that USA Women's Hockey Gold Medal!!!
« on: February 22, 2018, 08:55:02 AM »
Wow!  Proud to be an American and share in their victory.  It is a great rivalry with our northern neighbors and they compete with class.  What a finish in the shootout.  Hockey has the most exciting playoff ending in sports IMO.

A meaningful hockey game should not end in a shootout. Imagine Game 7 of a Stanley Cup Final going to a shootout. No way. Keep playing OT until a goal is scored.

This is the only flaw with Olympic hockey...well, along with not having NHL players.

So that is like saying you shouldn't have free throws in basketball or penalty kicks in soccer because it is just 1 player involved.  It is part of the game, they just isolate the skills at the end of the game.  You can't tell me it isn't exciting as hell!

A shootout in a playoff game would be akin to a free throw contest or a field goal contest deciding a game. No thanks.

A game meant to decide a medal or a championship or to advance to the next round of the playoffs should be played as long as it takes until the game is decided. In hockey, that means you play according to the way the game is meant to be played.

Shootouts are fine in the regular season because they are meant to save time.

Shootouts should never decide an Olympic Final, or like mentioned above, Stanley Cup playoff games.  Keep them in the round robin portion of the Olympics, but never in the playoff portion. Good game, great rivalry, horrible way to finish.

I also don't think a game like this should be decided in a shoot out, but way to go USA. And, the US Men's Curling team is in the Gold Medal game after defeating Canada. A Silver medal at the very least.

Jeff,

How about limiting your unlimited number of enthusiastic posts per day to golf related topics. Why not just open your window and let the world know of your love of women and the USA.

It was an exciting game to watch, but I too think it is disappointing when soccer style rules of penalty kicks takes place in major events.  Play the game to the end.  I don't even think penalty shots should be allowed in the NHL.  Play 5  minutes of OT then call it a draw...1 pt each.  Having some 3 pt games and others as 2 pt games is the height of stupidity.  All games should be worth the same number of pts.  Sorry for the rant...but the door was ajar  ;)

It's OT, but I don't care.
Congrats to the US Women.
As a long time NHL season ticket holder,  I understand the idea against the shootout for playoff/Olympic victory decisions, but I figured NBC and the OC figured they needed to have a winner decided within normal television programming time frames?  I doubt their ratings have been great this time around and they probably needed this. (Understood the rules were set before the ratings were known)

TV controls all.  I bet if the networks would pay the NHL enough, they would convert to shootouts even in the SC finals.  And, having sat through 3 of the longest playoff games in history (Dallas Stars under Hitchcock would have played for a week in their defensive style) at some point, it gets irrelevant.  When my son was young, we left one 3 OT game on a school night, figuring we knew it would end one of two ways.  The possible celebration wouldn't have been worth it, balanced against lack of sleep and the possible heart break.

When the women are showing their grand kids their gold metal, no one will recall it was won in shoot out, and one granny has a pretty good story to tell (although a game winning OT goal for the gold would be equally good!)

OK I've done that.  What next?   ;D

Look forward to meeting you John as you have the same same as one of my best golfing friends here in Saudi Arabia, who is from New Jersey and whose family has a pretty large pest control business except for the C not K.

If you like soccer (football in the rest of the world), you must really hate it that penalty kicks decide the World Cup winner when they are tied after 120 minutes.

A bit ironic, considering the flavor of many of JK's posts.  I like Jeff's enthusiasm and willingness to put himself out there, just as I like many of Jaka's whimsical observations.

Jim, I don’t want hockey to be anything like soccer. Leave shootouts/penalty shots to soccer.

The clinching shootout goal was really an unbelievable shot.

That being said, a shootout should not decide a gold medal game.

It's the equivalent of the Masters being tied after 72 holes and two players have a putt off from 20ft to decide who wins.

I think Golf should adopt this rule.

Take the players at the end and have them put from 5 feet, 10 feet, 15 feet, etc....until one of them misses.

Yes, having a shootout for the gold medals suck, but if you watched the overtime, it was extremely intense and competitive with each side having multiple opportunities on goal. Would one side have scored eventually? Probably. They had enough chances, but who knows how long that will take. They did have 20 minutes to sort it out, and they didn't. I wasn't too upset with the shootout this time around (and a hell of a shootout it was). I think penalty kicks in footy are far worse than a shootout in hockey.

A spoiler alert would have been helpful.  Now?  Three more episodes of Reign with the Mrs. tonight  - I'm actually looking forward to the episode where MQOS is beheaded - oops, perhaps should have included a spoiler alert!

Interesting comments.

The USA-Canada rivalry in women's hockey is the greatest active rivalry in team sports.  Sochi was incredible and this installment came close.

Did anyone watch the game?  After regulation time they played 20 minutes of 4-on-4.  Hard to imagine a goal wasn't scored in that full 4th period.

Sure, you could have them play all day or make it 3-on-3 or even woman-on-woman in some braveheart finale.  Forsberg's winner a long time ago is still remembered and was commemorated with a stamp.  The original poster is correct that a shootout conclusion for a game like this is dramatic, if not popular.

I spent a week with the top four teams in the world a few months ago and left a huge fan of world-level women's hockey.

It was a great game and congratulations to the US Women.  From a Canadian perspective I must say that I preferred the game four years ago when Canada overcame a 2-0 deficit in the third period and then won in OT.  There is some despondency north of the border for this loss and the failure to get a medal in either Men's or Women's curling.  However we will get over it, especially since our overall medal haul was very strong as we were in third place behind Germany and Norway.

I cannot get over the overall improvement of these two teams in the last 10 years or so. They are playing at an incredibly high level now..

In the spirit of this OT thread, I’m happy as “all get out” for the Women’s hockey team but it’s hard to be a proud American these days, with our buffoon in chief proving his lack of qualifications on an hourly basis. He makes Nixon look like Churchill.

I guess I’m still proud even if embarrassed.
