Re: USGA and R&A announce details of proposal for World Handicap System

The introduction of this new system allowing me to record "non-competition" rounds to have a handicap more reflective of the golf I'm playing.

I assume you're not in Scotland? That's a shame because here you (a category 1 golfer above 2.4) could submit 10 supplementary scores which would address this problem. Golfers in a category other than 1 can submit as many supplementary scores as they'd like, so it's really only a problem for better golfers.

It is a shame though. EGU adoption of the rule in Scotland would help. And of course your handicap may well be adjusted up in handicap review, although that's a slow remedy.

I guess my point is that adoption of American style score submission is a to me a poor solution to a very real problem.
I am indeed in Scotland Andy, an Englishman up in Aberdeen for the last 18 years...

I wasn't aware they had introduced a sub- category into cat 1 for this purpose, perhaps something I'll look at this year. Is this just new for 2018 then?

Lucky you! Not new this year, although maybe new last year. That's when I became aware of it anyway, but it may be longstanding. The system is a bit less flexible for better golfers, which is a shame, but I do understand why.

As long as your club isn't too restrictive on when you can submit supplementaries, you're good to go. You can play any rated tee, so you should be able to work it into a bounce game without too much bother. There's no CSS though so pick a calm day!

"Fit like" there Colin.
These days you don't just have to play in comps to keep your hcp valid, you can submit a 'supplementary score' by having a card marked by someone else if you announce beforehand (in the pro-shop at most clubs) that your intending to do such. Indeed supplementary scores for hcp purposes can be done over 9-holes as well as over 18.

Thanks for the clarification gents, I understand the process just never thought it was available for me as a cat1. Good to know, although the fact it's done against SSS would make it a hard grind - the CSS normally goes up at least one even in the calmest conditions, and if there is any wind it can often be 2 or 3 above SSS which makes a big difference. Might still give it a a go though if I've got enough practice in!
