Presumably the slime was the reason/excuse for the change. It's amazing how agronomy issues often lead to design changes.

Via a "Hard, Hard Fade"... I have (humbling) first-hand knowledge having visited the cliff side construction site of that hole.  Adam Lawrence has some rather painful photo documentation of the (mis)adventure. I was lucky the ball was alive and did play the ball down for a par as it was semi-gorse free.

He was on that topsoil pile, and, give the man credit, he did play from up there. I will try to dig the photo out.

I would imagine that the rule allowing relief from material left by the greenkeeper for later removal would come onto to play in this case though Mr. Halyard was well within his rights to play it as it lay. Bet it was a good view from up there too.

To be honest if he hadn't been on the topsoil pile he'd have been screwed royally -- in the middle of a huge expanse of shaped rock and grit, with a 20 foot wall of gorse in front of him and nowhere sensible to drop other than going back a hundred yards. It was only the elevation provided by the pile that gave him a shot.

Reminds me of the 2nd at North Berwick.  I think that Bill McBride RIP and I (not together) fanned a driver onto the sand and then a long iron to the green.  Maybe RDGC might think about keeping both Old and New greens and fairways, a la the 9th at Pacific Dunes.  It could make that part of the land an amazing bit of architecture.

Oh absolutely confirm Adam's account and agree with Rich Goodale.
I would have been skewered deep in "the land beyond the gorse". I was Lord of the Rings lucky.
The view was spectacular in a cinematic, Peter Jackson kind of way.  And not unlike a Hobbit who eats a "second breakfast", I took well advantage of a "Secret-Second Fairway" atop the dirt pile, or call it a "Second,... Second Cut" if you like. Nonetheless, it was worthy of a MasterCard Commercial.

Thanks David.  I have watched similar work day by day.  It is nice to get an overview of the entire process.  Interesting they had to sand cap the entire area.  I assumed that was not necessary on a links.

The old & new 7th holes are not on true links land. That land sits well above the links land below that is along the water.

To quote from Rich Goodale's post on the prior page: "The land on which Old 7th and New 7th are based is not linksland.  They are raised beaches (as are 1, 2, the first 200yards of 8 and 17, 16 green, and 18)."

The photos in the video show the many rocks/stones in the soil and just how little sand there is in that soil.

Last I heard the new 7th hole is already open for play, with mats being used in the fairway. Assuming a mild/warm spring (good "grow-in" weather), there is a good chance the mats will not be needed in the summer.
