Has there been any discussion on here that I missed?

Hard to tell as it's hard to know what you miss or what you catch...;-)

Did you do a search?

Muirfield, Scotland?
Ohio?

Is this thread about a second course at Muirfield or is it about your retention of GCA topics...;-)...?

Wow, I never knew they had a second course. Thankfully you aren't forced to play that one after lunch!

Pete,
They don't (yet...!)

Correct, they don´t have one yet, but has there been any discussion about its design and possible construction? Does female membership down the road increase membership and a second course becomes more important?

MC,
There has been previous discussion here about the land north of the existing course (west of Archerfield/Renaissance), which is a cracking bit of linksland, but I doubt if increasing female numbers would ever cause HCEG to think about building another course...

There were some murmurings a few years ago -

http://www.bunkered.co.uk/golf-news/muirfield-to-get-a-second-course

Hawtree did quite a bit of work before the 2013 Open so understandable he may have had a look.

However the course is far from busy apart from on a Tuesday and Thursday morning (when mere mortals are allowed in for two hours worth of tee times) and letting in a handful of women members is unlikely to mean a second course is a necessity. Most members either live away or have another local membership so it's pretty quiet most days.

Marty, David,

I believe there is a lot more than murmurings or even the article referenced above. I am very surprised that folks awell connected to UK golf have not heard or seen more. Or people don´t want to talk about it.

I have 36 holes there with a couple of members later in the month so if there is time between marching to our balls I will see what the word is on the links!

Judging from the process we went through for permits on the dunes land for The Renaissance Club, it will be difficult for them to get the course they want out there.  But, they traded us that land in part so we could test the waters for them, and even ten years ago, they talked of women members as a key driver of the project.

muirfield  was very flat, no dunes, boring for a new course
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Not the land where the new course had been suggested. It directly adjoins the three new holes at The Renaissance Club, right on the shoreline.

Utter drivel, of course, but a fair summation of groupspeak.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I believe there has been chat about it off and on for years and I know that Ken Moodie did a nine hole design for them back in the 1990’s (I think). Given the subsequent land swap with Renaissance they may have shelved or given up on the idea but then again maybe not. Either way, additional holes at the other side of the property would be a long way away from the clubhouse, and I doubt that the club would sanction a complete re-routing of their existing course to make the start for any additional holes closer to the clubhouse. I also can’t imagine them bringing in a fleet of buggies to get people over to the new holes.

As for lady members, from what I’ve heard most of the single sex clubs that voted in women members did so in the expectation that they wouldn’t have to accommodate that many. That seems to have been borne out, at least for the moment.

As it is I doubt Muirfield is all that heavily played such that it would need a relief course to take some of the pressure off. Maybe a new shorter/easier course would suit some of the old boys but again, the land for the new holes is a long way away from where they dispense the kummel.

I can see how addional members drives dynamics for a second, more leasurely pace course. Even on Tuesday's and Thursday's there are members playing in the afternoon, and fast! Really full course.

I am just tying up a few things I saw there, but lets say I would not be surprised if there were a full 18 golf course in the plans north of the current course.

A bulleting board?  Is that for members who forget their tie at lunch, or pass the port the wrong way?

I doubt the club really is thinking about a second 18. They don't need the money nor to relieve their existing course. TD, you are correct about the difficulties of permitting but I suspect that if any club has the necessary connections it is this one.
