A Modest Proposal: Golspie/Brora for the 2018 BUDA
« on: August 14, 2017, 04:36:36 PM »
With the ink barely on this year's BUDA, I would like to suggest we return to Scotland and experience Scottish links style golf on these two northeastern coast courses.

As an overseas member at Golspie I will volunteer to head up or participate in the organization of this outing.  Golspie is a curious mixture of holes in a very windy setting, and Brora is considered by many to be Dornochs little brother but a windier venue.

The expenses at these courses would be much lower than many of the more prestigious venues we have visited lately but I think the golf would be nearly as good.

Preliminary discussions have focused on the proximity of Royal Dornoch to these clubs and the potential for those seeking to play there to find at least one game. Other venues either nearby or on the way include Castle Stuart, Fortrose and Rosemarkie (a miracle of routing by James Braid), Tain (by Old Tom Morris) Wick, and for the truly adventurous Reay, another Braid, the northernmost 18 hole course on the mainland and an honor box experience.

Accommodation would most easily be found in Dornoch, 10 miles south of Golspie and at the Royal Marine in Brora 6 miles north.

As for timing, I would suggest early September.

I'll be tuning into this thread and providing additional information as the degree interest warrants it.  Informal overtures to both clubs have been greeted favorably.
Some days you play golf, some days you find things.

I'm not really registered, but I couldn't find a symbol for certifiable.

Steve, of all the suggestions floated around this is my favourite. Not least because of my love of these courses and it's a chance to pop and see my mum and dad at the same time. Assuming this gets firmed up ahead of anywhere else, count me in!
Cheers,
James

A pilgrimage to Brahan would be a nice addition too. (Provided someone knows the owner!) ;)

Marty,

I would to have you guys across for a game unless I shut the course down to play in the BUDA as well  ;D .

Steve,

if this does happen count me in. Also, happy to lend a hand if needed.

One of three excellent proposals floated during this year's BUDA.  Can we move this to the Future BUDA Venues thread that has already started, so that the conversation all takes place on one thread?  The other proposals floated (and being discussed on that other thread) are Goswick/Dunstanburgh or Harlech/Aberdovey.  Other proposals welcome!
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.
