A little fuzzy where this is leading , but it feels ugly.

We live in a world where inequity abounds on a daily basis , often in epic proportions for some . I sincerely doubt that anyone on this site really knows that type of prejudice. They may have at some point but found a way to escape to a better place.

I feel  fortunate to have learned from many on this site , and have met more than a few.  We have talked on the phone, by e-mail , or when very fortunate , on a golf course or construction site.  That a circle of friends met at one of the most interesting architectural accomplishments built in the last fifty years seems like a nice story.

 What am I missing ?

If you order a large pizza and am sitting alone who is the most generous? You or the stranger who pullls up a seat and offers to pay for half?

Come to Philly. Let's play some golf. Complaining about others playing golf isn't cool...

Inviting people to your private club is no more generous than posting a pic of your kegger on Snapchat.
Kegger on SnapChat... Classic.

Ran was signaling to the cameraman (Mr. Moore) and the world that he was 2 up at that point of the match :) The needling started long before the first bottle of wine the night before as I jumped into the weekend only for the last day.

There is a chance that the "We have to stick together!" statement by Ran could have been about the camaraderie of GCA and NOT the architecture, but it is architecture that builds the camaraderie. I like what Steve Lang wrote:

As RJ said... reach out, meet up with other gca'ers, and play, discuss, repeat as able.
My highlight of 2016 was reaching out to Duncan C prior a business trip, and getting to spend a great day trekking over Reddish Vale, and discussing gca and world affairs.

Bright moments... but you've got to make a little effort to accomplish anything of value..

At the Northeast knockout last month I played with Chris DeToro. Yale and Wannamoisett had logistical issues so we pulled out a GCA public favorite for the match - Shennecosett. To Steve's point, we played.

Today at Cape Arundel on a 71 degree day in Maine, there is an epic match of three Maine architecture gurus and Ran:

* Mr Moore - Secretary of Maine State Golf Association, GCA member, and many time Maine Amateur player
* Hal Phillips - Maine based golf writer, entrepreneur, and guitar player in a band
* David Cummins - Former mini-tour player, Maine based golf architect/shaper/builder/fixer-upper, many time winner of many New England tournaments
* Ran Morrissett - GCA and Cabot Links founder

So to answer Peter's question on local vs national, that is how you do it. You bring Golf's Most Beloved (easily replaced by 1499 other goobers here) and have them play with the locals. People will often listen to a stranger saying they should cut down trees as opposed to the local friend/member. Now maybe a few of us can get guys from the R&A, PGA, and USGA to Cape Arundel to see a 6000 yard course with some of the greatest greens in the country. Cape A = Local Cool Course that can be showcased.

To make John Kavanaugh feel happy today, I was NOT invited to the Cape Arundel match, and I will be doing this today:

Ran and Mr Moore BEFORE the match needling began.

I have a feeling that this is somehow directed my way, but I'm not positive, as it is written in a ghostly-anonymous way. May I have a referee? Thanks in advance.

The point of your last 10 was to show what diversity one had in their list. It was really telling into what person I'd tee it with or loathe.  To bring class envy in is repulsive. Then to bring the election in is classless.  Actually we were states with our own culture back in the day before we embraced group thought.

I have lived long enough to learn that many--if not most--people never have the good fortune to find a passion.  And those that do are even more fortunate if they find a Community among which to share that passion.  I subscribe generally to the prevailing philosophy of this site but not as a matter of religion, and I find the most engaging and educational threads those that are heartfelt but civil debates about an architect, course, hole, or design feature.  In my relatively few months on GCA, the generous and kind PMs sent my way from people who have never met me reinforces that for the very large part, GCA is a Community.  Maintaining and encouraging that Community around a shared passion is my definition of "Stick Together."

When I first joined this board, I was receiving a ton of grief from Pat Mucci about my desire to play Victoria National and how I liked some of Fazio's work at Shadow Creek or something. I received a kind PM from jakaB inviting me to play VN with him whenever I wanted. Sorry John, but that was extremely kind and generous of you to invite a newbie to come play your club. While the day we played could have been one of the hottest days I ever played, it was also one of the coolest. I love VN and will always remember you for your generosity that day.

Jim,

It's easy to join great courses, the difficult part is finding someone to join you. I am always surprised, pleased and grateful any and every time someone wants to play golf with me at any course. This is all magnified at destination courses where you need guests to enjoy your investment. Sitting in the shadows cherry picking who to bless with the privilege is not generosity, it smells of desperation. If we are going to "stick together" open up your outings to everyone. First come, first served.

Situationally, like many things in life, this can work. However, I brought a "budding architecture guru" to an outing/group/event at a course that I belonged to and he worked at. It became an issue for him, not me, with his employer. The concept that a Sand Hills, Cypress Point, or National Golf Links can be treated the same way as some of my Yale events is just not a real conversation.

I have met more terrific people through this site than anywhere else in my lifetime.

Even those who sometimes come across as adversarial here tend to be much different and pleasurable in person, and the fact we share a common passion tends to conquer all divides.

Over the years I've played golf with so many different and disparate folks from across the country that I met here that I couldn't list them all from memory.   Sadly, some no longer contribute here and some have passed on.

I've played golf with many folks who I've had some of the most contentious disagreements and discussions here about everything from politics to golf course origins and without exception have had enjoyable personal relations apart from this internet thingy.

I think that's all Ran meant.

All I'm saying is that it is not generous to invite people to play golf. It's fun and helps justify the investment in a private club. Maybe it's my Catholic upbringing but generosity and fun don't go together.

My tennis group goes through the same thing every Tuesday night. We prefer to play doubles and almost always need a sub. The sub of course never pays for the court time, I was a sub for a year or so, but we are the ones grateful for anyone who takes the time and effort to join us. I never thought of us as heroes.

Oh, good. I can now address each point in my unique, imitable manner.

1. I don't understand the second sentence. Is it longhand for covfefe?

2. I can think of many things more repulsive than class envy. I respectfully reject that adjective as remotely useful in this situation. I'll offer pathetic as an off-the-top-of-my-head alternative.

3. I also disagree with the application of classless in the next point. If we were classless, we would have agreed upon the outcome of the erection and we would also not have this confrontation, as all would be invited, everywhere.

4. As an aside, I separate a work of art/function from the membership. I don't need to explain why nor how to this educated and literate siblinghood. I can go to a club where I have no natural in nor welcome, and shoot images. My great appreciation for the workmanship (from architect to stone pullers, plow drivers and earth grinders) and the playability of the course, is not deterred by the exclusivity of access.

The old selling of mama down the river falls flat when we think of the history of racial and class inequity and mistreatment at where we annually watch major championships on media (can't say television anymore, as there are more.) If we weren't selling mama, we would avoid watching said tournamentes, thereby pulling our microscopic, financial support from their coffers.

1.  Why should i respond to drivel

2. More deflection. Its a mental disorder

3. The Sand Hills gathering was over 10 years ago, has nothing to do with this election.  Ran has said countless times to you people, stop bringing political shit on this website.  There are people that thought the previous president divided people and others that think current one has.  That twaddle isn't needed on here.  It was classes, disrespectful to wishes of the website administration.

4.  That's like saying I can go into someone house to take photos of famous building architecture without their approval.

Selling Mama, wow you are sick.  You now are a race huckster.

In my book Ira in post 34 and Mike C in post#40 sum up the site well to me.

However, there are 1500 people on here and only a few I would want to play golf with.  That's not meant as a slam just an honest fact for any of us.  I've met pervs on here that have been in their mom's basement watching porn for a solid month before coming down to play a GCA event and yet I enjoyed playing golf with them while I have met  young whippersnapper, wannabe blue jacket types who are afraid to sit in the seat of a golf car at a public course who I would never wish to play with again.
But when it comes to discussing golf architecture it just like beef as an example.  It's hard for a guy to discuss Waygu beef and be taken seriously if he has never had it.  The same goes for golf design.   AND it's even harder for the guy who eats Waygu beef to discuss hamburger if he has never had that either.  AND THAT IS WHAT IS SO OFTEN MISSED HERE.  So many of the guys on here only play the top stuff that they are not capable of discussing architecture overall.

Mike Young,

Your Beef analogy is a terrific one.   I like to play all courses, great and small.

My "Last Ten" is particularly feeble and miniscule by comparison at present, but fun nonetheless.  Sort of like a Waffle House burger.

RJ:   Yours was one of the best written and meaningful post I have read here that was not written by Pietro.   You put my thoughts and feelings into sentences that anyone can understand.  Thank you sir!   I'm hoping your health is good, as I am honoured to be your partner in three weeks.

We have all types on GCA.
Seven figure incomes or five figure (like me).
Country Club members and public track patrons.
Conservatives and Liberals.
All of that is irrelevant.

The COMMON FACTOR bringing us together is LOVE OF GOLF and our interest in GCA.

I would love to play Merion or NGLA or dozens of other legendary courses that I can think of. I have made 1mm = 1 yard scale models of these courses and played them over and over again with friends.  But I knew, years ago, that I would never be able to play them.

Thanks to musician friends in Scotland, I was invited to come over to music festivals and graciously offered bed and board.  A side bonus was the ease of getting to play legendary courses over there.
The New Course, Brora, Machrihanish, N Berwick: Just call and get a tee time.  Come on over and play.  So every two years I take my bonus check (which I should be saving for my retirement when I get to 80 or whatever) and go to Scotland to meet friends old and new (many from GCA!) and to walk some of the lovliest courses I've ever seen.

And also,  because of GCA I have been able to meet many wonderful people, to play courses in the states I never would have imagined I would ever see and to learn so much about golf and gca.

Yes, we are all different.  But we all have much in common!  Can't we ignore the disagreements and concentrate on the reason why we are here in the first place?  We all have something to contribute - from vastly different perspectives.  We will never all agree but we all can learn something if we are willing to be open minded and open hearted.
"If you're the swearing type, golf will give you plenty to swear about.  If you're the type to get down on yourself, you'll have ample opportunities to get depressed.  If you like to stop and smell the roses, here's your chance.  Golf never judges; it just brings out who you are."
