Pebble Beach - 13 Green
« on: May 03, 2017, 04:23:47 PM »

My business has 2 club groups (total 32 golfers) playing Pebble Beach (& Spy) this month as part of 2 week tours through the US. Its a long & expensive trip from Melbourne to Monterey. I just received the email below from my Account Manager. No mention of compensation. Interested in the Lounge's interpretation & assessment of how this may detract from the overall experience of theses golfers" once in a lifetime round".

"Just wanted to forward you some information on the 13th green at Pebble Beach. It has been reconstructed and is currently healing. We have an alternate green built and in use that is located 75 yards short of the existing green. We have not experienced any guest impact; I mostly just wanted to make you aware ahead of time. This same type of reconstruction has been completed on holes 1-5, 7, 9, 14, 15, 17 and the practice putting green (10 total). As you know, over the past many years we have made efforts to convert each one of the putting surfaces at Pebble Beach to USGA specifications. This requires a total rebuild of the greens, adding significant drainage and a SubAir moisture reduction system. Ultimately, all greens at Pebble Beach will be uniform, USGA spec, sand based greens. If you have any questions at all or would like more detailed information explaining the scope of work, please don’t hesitate to let me know."

It's not like they're missing out on playing 7 or 18 or something. I can't imagine it would be a big issue.

Should be no big deal. Relax and enjoy the view from the 13th fairway. And have a great time playing the remaining 35 fantastic and challenging holes you'll be attacking at Pebble Beach and Spyglass.

Welcome to Pebble Beach and safe travels!

Agree. It's one hole. You guys will live. You can still hit a tee shot, gawk at the $20M homes on your right, short wedge into the green, make your par or better and move onto the exciting finish.

Yes, it is unfortunate. However, it sure beats getting beaten on by driving rain for your entire round.
You are almost guaranteed a dry round at PB in May.

The web site says: "The 13th green will reopen for play in mid-May, but we wanted to share a sneak peek, and fill you in on what to expect the next time you play Pebble Beach:

IMO the 13th is worst hole on the course (that and maybe 11), so you're not missing much

New #13 green is now open and very good.  Much improved.  Still with a right to left tilt, but less dramatic.

Jim, that's good news ...if its open. My AM less than 5 minutes ago was still apologising & saying it would not re-open until May 15.

I agree that the fact its #13 (snoozer) makes this less of an issue than if it were 7 or 8 or 9 or 18. More than anything else I was ticked off by the arrogance of the venue to suggest "there was no guest impact". In the end, they have now agreed with my suggestion & are giving all my guests a Yardage Book & Hat Clip Ball Marker. Token gestures but may turn a small negative into a small positive.

FWIW, you guys are much more patient & forgiving than most of my travelling golfers. Temporary Greens on courses with US$500 Green Fees is a red rag at a bull for most of my guests.

Seriously?  Guys can't stand having one green out of play for maintenance work when they visit a course?  More fodder for my new thread topic!

However I was disappointed to read that the work was not just about rebuilding the green but apparently softening the contours.  #13 green was anything but a snoozer ... a miss to the right was a stroke gone for sure.

Either a bogey, or a truly memorable par. I have the same feeling about 11, and had it about 14 before the recent renovation.

I can certainly understand the practical value of reconstruction on 14 and 13 (and 17) such that they can now pin the greens in spots that were not acceptable placements prior to the reconstruction. However, one thing I truly enjoyed about Pebble is that the inland holes seemed to have some of the most interesting and challenging greens (I think 11 is about as much fun as a straightforward golf hole can be.)

It would appear they are drifting away from that situation. At least now I can tell people how great Pebble used to be. ::)

Just for clarity:

-my feeling is that 13 (the hole, not just the green) is one of Pebble's least memorable....hence my snoozer comment
-my agro is not that holes or greens can never be taken out of play for work...just that when a resort such as Pebble does this, they should offer some kind of compensation (even if its just a token gesture)

I hope I didn't misspeak--it was open last weekend, but the temporary green was also there.  Maybe they are only using the new green on some days.
But I don't think it will spoil the experience either way.  Have fun.
