Three rules:

1) Cash or credit card, no checks.

2) Carts with a medical note.

3) Play in 4 hours or get charged a $100 premium on the green fee you played. If a member slows you down, report him or her.

Welcome to the club, for the day-week!

Would anybody want to play it? Remember what the horse designed by committee look like...

If so, we'd be foolish not to let them.

I don't know about we, but I would.  That said, it would be much more like the Muirfield model rather visitors welcome at any time.  That is, assuming I could afford the subs and be willing to pay the subs.

What would be the monthly dues? What would be the fee for guests vs. visitors?

I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that didn't allow some outside play.  Like Sean I'm a fan of the Muirfield model.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

To Sean's point, most of our clubs host outside events on Mondays. I would welcome outside play, but rather than the Sausage and Olive Loaf Manufacturer's Scramble on Monday, open it to random visitors on Mondays.

I would guess it depends on whether we needed the revenue.  Based on all of the terrific courses that struggle on that front I bet we would.

I like the idea of allowing outside play for a block of time (maybe an hour at 10 am) but requiring the visitors to walk.  Walking seems to limit the number of people who play slow and do not take care of the course.

The Muirfield model works because it is Muirfield. Members take pride is seeing people who would love to be members enjoy their course. Quite different than watching a bunch of mooches feed of the teet of your monthly dues.

I seem to recall an old thread from years ago that the best ownership model is one where a Benevolent dictator leads the charge.

Can't imagine it would be any different for this group.

P.S.  My vote would be to have to it be open Monday - Wednesday for limited public play...

I recall a comment about Muirfield being a gentleman's dining club with a golf course attached. Also, which version of Muirfield? The one before or the one after the recent issues about membership? :)

Yes, open to limited outside play so that avid golf architecture fans could experience it.  Yes, walkers only except for medical reasons.

But I want to know how 300 of the people on this site would find a way to agree on who the architect for this ideal course should be.

A truly "members only club" would be fine with me.  I like that model.

100% of dues contributes to maintaining the facility.  Bidermann has a similar model but they seem to have become more lax on the outside play aspect.

So 300 of us are going to put up $15,000 a piece to build the place and another $2,500 a year to keep it open so the 301st guy on the site can show up and pay $70 to play. We can't even get 16 guys to show up at Bandon to play without getting our panties in a bunch over a deposit refund.

Yes, I'd allow guest play, because the 300 from this site who would participate would all have to come from a distance too far to play regularly.  You would need guest play revenue in order to keep the club in good financial shape.

There are a couple clubs here in Chicagoland that are in financial trouble.  The normal economic model hereabouts for a private club calls for approximately 250 regular members.  With the right dues and the revenue generated by members who bring guests, one can typically run a pretty good country club.  It seems to me that at least a couple of them, which I won't mention, would be great candidates for 300 of us kicking in $10K to be a founding member, which would relieve the club of its debt while allowing the remaining club members to remain.  And we would be members of a great "national" club with phenomenal gca bona fides.  A fantasy, to be sure, but one can dream...

Yes to outside play like the Cypress model. Limited and in early am during the week.

Personally, I would hire a proven project manager who may be building his first solo design.

Given that "300 of us" are members, I would hire Jim Urbina to do "Old Mac II" and hit all the template holes. Put a premium on "fun".

One small building like Dunes Club or Black Sheep.

First tee times are for 2-3 balls seeking to play in under 3 hours.

It takes so much energy, patience and dedication to be a good member at a great club that at best I'd be a shitty owner of a poor one.

and yes, we'd welcome outside play, accompanied by a member, any time...

Welcome outside play if we really needed the revenue, speaking for myself.  And we would treat those visitors exceptionally well (much better than they do at Muirfield).  Cash or check (with appropriate ID) only; no credit cards accepted.
