Hi,

Wednesday the 25th of May I'll be starting my journey from the Liverpool area north to end up in Glasgow the 30th.
A few rounds of links golf must be part of this journey!
I'm looking at courses that are a bit of the beaten track such as Siloth, Southerness and Seascale.
Just north of Liverpool there are many courses to choose... and the choice not easy.

Any suggestions are welcome as well as opportunities to play a round together.

Cheers,

 Jan

Silloth is a must.  Of the courses north of Liverpool I think my favourite (so far, I haven't played them all) is Lytham but I'm sure others will disagree.  I'd play Formby and West Lancs ahead of Birkdale but again, others will certainly disagree!  Definitely off the beaten track is Brampton (near Carlisle) which is rather different, if different is what you're looking for.  It's fun but no-one would call it great.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

It depends n your budget really. Any of the Open rota courses will be expensive though I agree with Mark that Lytham is worth a look but as he will have suspected disagree about Birkdale though I do not think either offer any real value for money. Southport and Ainsdale is a good course as is Lytham Greendrive. I would also recommend St.Annes Old Links. Further up Appleby whilst not a links is worth a visit. West Lancs is excellent as is Silloth and Southerness is a must see too.Closer to Glasgow there are others on here better placed to recommend and there have been a couple of threads recently.

As much as I like Brampton and Appleby (and Carlisle is even better) you have only given yourself 5 or 6 days so I wouldn't necessarily play those courses particularly if you are planning to play more than one course on some of the days.

I'd look at it as perhaps a 3 stage trip with the first stage the courses north of Liverpool such as the ones Mark referred to. I've really only played Formby of that lot so I'll let others comment on them.

The next stage is the bit between those courses and the Ayrshire courses. If you are looking to concentrate on links golf then the 3 standouts along the way are probably Seascale, Silloth and Southerness. All have had photo tours/threads on them at some stage.

The final stage is probably Ayrshire. Ignoring Turnberry on the assumption you are looking to play "lesser" courses you have about 11/12 links courses between Prestwick and Irvine, possibly the most intensive stretch of links golf anywhere. That number includes Royal Troon, Turnberry and Western Gailes which are very well known on here. Others that don't get quite the same level of attention are Prestwick St Nich, Dundonald, Glasgow Gailes, Barrassie, Irvine Bogside the Portland. In addition you have the 3 Troon muni's of which the Darley is the pick IMO. I don't think you'd be disappointed in any of them.

As has been said, a lot depends on your budget.

It would be feasible to include five Open courses in this trip - Hoylake, Birkdale, Royal Lytham, Turnberry, and Troon - but most would not consider that great value for money!

I would pick from West Lancs, Formby, St Annes Old Links, Seascale, Windermere, Silloth, and a couple along the Ayrshire coast which is so far an area I have not visited.  Formby and Silloth are must-sees.

Don't miss the opportunity to explore the wonderful Lake District for at least an afternoon and early evening - perhaps after a morning at the quirky Windermere before a full day at Silloth the following day.

Find lodgings in the Keswick area rather than in Silloth itself!  ;D

Just returned from the lakes. Both Windermere and Appleby in good condition. The views from Windermere are stunning. Quite quirky as a course but wonderful. As Duncan say's, you should definitely stay for a while and explore the Lake District,  it is truly a beautiful part of the UK.

3 of your 5 days are a UK holiday weekend, accommodation and good course access maybe a significant issue for you.

Hi,

Thank you all for your replies. I didn't quite realise it is a holiday weekend.
My focus is on links courses, but I do not need to play all of them this time;
I'd like to take it easy and have a good reason to come back;)

Before the weekend; I'll focus on getting rounds in at Formby, West Lancs and
Royal Lytham (a personal must as my hero Seve won there twice).

For the weekend I might indeed have a look around the Lake district.
and try to play a morning or late afternoon round at Seascale.

After the weekend I'll see if I can play Southerness and Siloth.

Along the Ayrshire coast I have played a number of courses already
in an earlier trips (Troon: old and one of the muni's, Prestwick, Dundonald and Turnberry)
and  I have Turnberry lined up for the first Friday of June. (luckily not for the full whack!)
I'm really interested in seeing the difference between the current
course and the old lay-out.

Cheers,
   Jan

Beefore you leave the Hoiylake area, assuming you are starting this trip there, don';t miss Wallasey.  It was the second qualifying course for the 1930 Open won by Bobby Jones, and it's well worth a round.  Some great links holes and a couple of more mundane ones inland, but lots of fun.

Not exactly in a straight line but if you can manage a quick divert inland on the first day, Delamere Forest is a lovely example of how golf should be played - ie/ in tweeds with a Labrador.

Silloth is a must.  Southerness is excellent, but so is Powfoot (Annan) which is closer to the M74.   Closer to Glasgow, any one of the links courses from Girvan to West Kilbride are worth playing for various reasons.

Enjoy!

Dear Niall,

I'm travelling on my own.
Work brings me to Warrington and I always try to get in a few
rounds when I'm in the UK!

Cheers,

Silloth most definitely.

Formby and, if you have an extra 2 and 1/2 hours, Formby Ladies.
