Ranking David Kidd golf courses
« on: February 22, 2017, 04:02:21 PM »
It appears he has two world class courses, two excellent courses and potentially one that will fall into one of those categories.  Then there's a drop off?  Granted he's still young.  All in all its not a bad batting average.

World Class:

Bandon Dunes
Nanea

Excellent:

Gamble Sands
Queenswood

Potential:

Sand Valley

The rest:

Fancourt
TPC Stonebrae
Powerscourt
Castle Course
Huntsman Springs
Macrihanish Dunes
Laucala Island
Beaverbrook (with Tom Watson)
Guacilito
Tetherow

All I can say is give me Mach Dunes over Queenswood any day of the week. I thought the former was excellent.

How about Tetherow in Bend, OR?

I enjoyed Huntsman Springs more than Bandon Dunes...

There's no danger that Mach Dunes is amongst 'the rest'. It's awesome.

I've played TPC Stonebrae quite a few times and its unique and above average.  It is a housing track and granted an extremely difficult hilly piece of property but there are some very good holes.

I don't know what to think of Kidd.  I'm told he mailed in some designs for the money yet he has had some success. Jury is still out.

Four for fourteen is a .286 batting average  :)  which is not really that great in baseball

This is a weird thread because almost no one has said much of anything about any of the courses listed -- I don't know if Gary has played the four he counted as "hits" or not, while Joel is attempting to be sued for slander.

I've seen six of his courses, and would rank them as follows:

Gamble Sands
Bandon Dunes

Huntsman Springs
Queenwood

TPC Stonebrae

The Castle Course

I think Gamble Sands is at the top as well. Haven't read any comments from you on it so would be curious to hear what you thought. Tee to green I think it's world class, but greens and surrounds lack interest.

My father and I had the same notes on the course... until he played the state's mid-am there with the greens rolling 11-12 (compared to 8 the first play-through) and he said the subtleties of the greens really showed with those speeds. He appreciates the course even more now.

Tom:

Didn't you have a thread last year about "Rank my courses"?   I suspect that's what this is about.

I haven't played many of his courses but it appears that more than 4 are hits. What are we talking about being rated?  Based on the responses, it looks like 6 which would be a 428 average.

I liked Guacalito in Nicaragua very much. Not a conventionally 'great' golf course, but heaps of fun, ideal holiday golf. It was built at the same time as Gamble Sands, so it is another example of the 'new David'. Lots of width, interesting greens and a particularly fine set of par threes.
