I used to fly Alaska Air into North Bend from Portland when I lived in California. Back then there was just 3 courses and so we would add Bandon Crossings or Sand Pines to start the trip.


I am headed out this weekend to Bandon and will be going through Chicago to Portland and then driving down.


The key question- what was the weather like?

We must have been lucky because we did the DEN-OTH flights last September without an issue.  Those flights allowed us to play 18 on the day we left Chicago and 9 easily the morning we flew home.  We used ShipSticks to ensure our bags were there.  Our flight from Chicago to Denver was delayed because of a major storm in Chicago, but United held the North Bend flight because more than half of that flight was on the delayed flight from Chicago.

I think in September and October you can fly anywhere in North America without issues, beautiful time of year

Random comment:  I've heard horror stories about flights into and out of North Bend many times during the 16 years I've been visiting, although the guys with a G2 don't seem to have many problems.

Sven - just trying to help some people not go through what I had to go through. 


Ira - glad I could at least give you some extra information to make a more informed choice.  I would not do it again, no matter what time of year it is.  We had the sunniest skies in Bandon the day we were set to leave and it did not matter.


Scott - At the risk of devolving this site into a "weather blog" - We had 6 days of awesome golf.  When we went out in the afternoon for 36, we did get hammered on two of the afternoons.  I mean HAMMERED as in 40-50mph and it felt like hail going sideways.  My best advice - if the weather looks iffy for a day - change your tee time to Trails.  A couple of days that COMPLETELY saved us from some strong winds.  Once we left hole #1, we didn't really have much wind impact us until Trails 18.

4 hours in a car with friends is nothing. Especially that drive. Up the coast, then across no-cell-reception land, then up the highway where all the slow drivers are in the left lane. I do like it, but I laugh at the oddities.

First, I'm sorry for your rotten luck. Second, did you opt for the North Bend option to avoid the 4-hour drive to Portlandia, or was it money as well? I've played there twice, as part of a larger trip each time, so getting in and out always involved cars and more places to visit.

We flew in to Portland on the way there.  That is what we had done in the past.  My father-in-law was traveling with us this time and did not want to drive that far back to Portland at the end of the trip.  Man, did he learn his lesson!!!

This is a problem?  Seems like a plan for me.  Tell the wife I am going on a 3 day golf trip to Bandon.  My flight gets cancelled so it is not my fault and the wife can't get mad at me.  I then make it a 5 day trip.

This is the greatest golf trip idea that I have ever received.  Thanks.

I can see a lot of benefit to a discussion of options for getting to Bandon.   

I tend to minimize my time on threads that don't interest me.

For those coming from Toronto / eastern Canada, the OTH lottery is really the only option now that Air Canada has deleted its direct flight to Portland, unless one has all the time in the world and doesn't care about playing on arrival day and getaway day. I will also second one piece of advice above: send the club's ahead via Ship Sticks!  As mentioned, baggage is often taken off the SFO-OTH flight it seems.
