I'll leave this as an open invitiation until Mid-March and then will work on getting brackets out based on location.  I see no reason why we couldn't accommodate Mr. Doak's request to have the first round deadline be the end of May.....that would give everyone 2+ months to play their first match.  I agree it would be much easier to have the match participants agree on a date/location instead of trying to have everyone play together. 


We can also include OH, IA, MN, etc. again just as long as participants are willing to drive.  You can either add your location to this thread or PM if you do not want it disclosed publicly.  If it could work logistically it would be cool to have the championship match played at the MWM. 


Ben, you would only play CGC if you could play the Rav in the morning??  You and Brian start working on that CGC invite and I'll gladly be your 3rd.

If one of you guys has to play me maybe we can do it at Chicago Golf. 


Generally, though, what I suggested for the UK version was as follows:


One match per month -- so, first round has to be completed by May, second round by June, etc.  That would give us five rounds by the end of September, so the field would ideally be 32 players.  Divide the field geographically into halves or quarters, and randomly draw the opponents from there, so that people wouldn't have to travel far until the last couple of rounds.


My suggestion was to try to play matches roughly halfway between the participants at a neutral site -- ideally one that neither player had played before -- so the report of the match would include a report on the golf course.


Whichever player is the first listed in the matchup should provide three alternate dates [not all in the same week] when he could play.  The second listed player should nominate three potential venues [at least one of which is closer to player 1, and at least two of which player 2 has not played].  Player 1 then makes the final call on venue. 


If players cannot agree on a date within the month allotted, they should both forfeit, unless they both agree which of them should go through.

It might be more reasonable if there are no set time limit for matches...what is the rush?  The deal doesn't need to be completed by any fixed date.  If things get out of control with a match holding up the parade folks can simply drop the two chaps a friendly note and request they get on with it. So far as I know, there are no time limits for the UK knockout.

No, they do not.  I have been consulting there for more than ten years, but if I want to play the course, I have to induce someone to go and play with me.  I think they have the strictest guest policy of any of the clubs where we consult.

I'm open to any ideas/suggestions, but at this point I'm thinking we'll cap the field at 32 players.....unless we can get up to 64 which very well may happen considering the amount of interest in the competition.  This way everyone will play a first round match. Or if nobody cares if they have a bye I can leave it open and randomly draw who gets the bye when it's time to make the bracket.

I will also simply mention that I'm more interested in getting an excuse to play some fun golf on decent courses than anything else. If it's easier logistically to abandon the traditional 32 or 64 entrant bracket format in favor of making early matches easier to arrange through creatively-assigned regions or something like that, I'd be all for it. If that means a bye here and there, or that some players have to play more matches to reach the championship rounds, I for one would be fine with it.


And I'm not just saying that because Steve beat me to claiming the 32nd spot. We all know that Hoover's going to WD as soon as his wife finds out he's expressed interest in this thing - I'll just take his spot when that happens.

Ben raises a good point.  There are other events that matches could be played at to help alleviate the need to pick some playing opportunities over others.  Summer Ball at Greywalls or the Mashie are great examples.

If you want to make this hum find out who the raters are and disperse them evenly throughout the bracket. This will make finding a fine private course equidistant between opponents much easier. Not to mention the rater won't have to play alone. A win, win for everyone.
