Midwest USA GCA knockout - 2017 (See Reply #126 for brackets)
« on: February 06, 2017, 07:01:04 PM »
Piggybacking off of the UK GCA knockout competition I am wanting to see if there would be any interest in arranging a similar event in the greater Chicagoland (not necessarily limited to) region. I am thinking matches could potentially be played in MI, IN, IL and WI depending on how far participants would be willing to drive (thinking 2 hours max would be reasonable?)  Sounds like a great way to see some new courses and meet fellow GCA enthusiasts.  Any and all suggestions would be would be welcome, and I understand this would probably be almost impossible to pull off but worth a shot.  Here are a few ideas borrowed from the UK thread:

- Attempt to find a site midway between participants that holds some sort of architectural significance
- Matches would be arranged to try and minimize driving distance
- Impose deadline to complete matches

At this point just let me know of your interest and if there are enough participants I can arrange the competition.

Let's meet in the middle. How about Chicago Golf Club? I'd play there.

I'd take you up on that, but only if we made it a 36 hole match and played the Rav in the morning?

Almost started this same thread myself, because I was jealous of the UK guys.

I would do my best to participate, as long as the first match doesn't have to be completed until late May ... I am traveling a lot in Asia in April and the first half of May.  I wouldn't want to be "that guy" who defaults without even playing one match.

Anyone with contacts at Moraine.  Would be great to see that restoration.

off topic but Moraine is hosting a state Am qualifier. I'd be a fringe hopeful but might be worth it just to see the course. http://www.ohiogolf.org/html/tournaments_schedule.asp

This could be very fun...can't promise I could play in it, but I'd try.

You should get a list of entrants, then set up brackets based on location.  It should be up to each individual match to secure a course rather than try to play them all at one course.  Then make the final match required to be at the Midwest Mashie.

I'll leave this as an open invitiation until Mid-March and then will work on getting brackets out based on location.  I see no reason why we couldn't accommodate Mr. Doak's request to have the first round deadline be the end of May.....that would give everyone 2+ months to play their first match.  I agree it would be much easier to have the match participants agree on a date/location instead of trying to have everyone play together.

We can also include OH, IA, MN, etc. again just as long as participants are willing to drive.  You can either add your location to this thread or PM if you do not want it disclosed publicly.  If it could work logistically it would be cool to have the championship match played at the MWM.

Ben, you would only play CGC if you could play the Rav in the morning??  You and Brian start working on that CGC invite and I'll gladly be your 3rd.

If one of you guys has to play me maybe we can do it at Chicago Golf.

Generally, though, what I suggested for the UK version was as follows:

One match per month -- so, first round has to be completed by May, second round by June, etc.  That would give us five rounds by the end of September, so the field would ideally be 32 players.  Divide the field geographically into halves or quarters, and randomly draw the opponents from there, so that people wouldn't have to travel far until the last couple of rounds.

My suggestion was to try to play matches roughly halfway between the participants at a neutral site -- ideally one that neither player had played before -- so the report of the match would include a report on the golf course.

Whichever player is the first listed in the matchup should provide three alternate dates [not all in the same week] when he could play.  The second listed player should nominate three potential venues [at least one of which is closer to player 1, and at least two of which player 2 has not played].  Player 1 then makes the final call on venue.

If players cannot agree on a date within the month allotted, they should both forfeit, unless they both agree which of them should go through.
