Tony's comments on Sean's thread has me wondering what clubs/groups of clubs offer the most architectural bang for your money.

I've come to realize that we have a very interesting set up here in The Netherlands if you are member of one of the Old 9 courses but I'm curious if similar or even far better such arrangements exist in golf.

Here is our example:

Cost of a round at all of these based on Old 9 Course reciprocal arrangement - 35 euro. I ranked the courses in terms of architectural significance. I think it's a very strong and unique offering the more I look at it.

1. Royal Hague (links) (Allison/Colt) (45 min)
1. Utrechtse De Pan (heathland) (Colt) (25 min)
3. Kennemer Golf Club (links) (B&C) (Colt) (40 min)
4. Eindhovense (Colt) (heathland) (60 min)
5. Hilversumsche (Colt) (heathland) (25 min)
6. Rosendaelsche (Pennink) (heathland) (60 min)
7. Toxandria (Morrison (Colt,Allison, Morrison) (65 min)
8. Broekpolder (Pennink) (50 min)

(Noordwijkse is the other one of course where I play.)

Burnham & Berrow has a pretty good reciprocal arrangement, I think the cost is the guest fee at each club.

Hunstanton
Littlestone
Seaton Carew
Silloth on Solway
Wallasey
Castletown
Little Aston
Broadstone
Moortown

and some foreign clubs.

McConnell Golf has a pretty great deal. If you belong to one of his 11 courses you belong to all of them. They include some pretty wonderful courses: Musgrove Mill, Holston Hills, Sedgefield (Where the pros played the Wyndham), Old North State, CC of Asheville, The Reserve on Pawleys Island, and some others. You can play up to 12 times total at your non home courses. No greens fees are charged. I have yet to play the minimum. They are scattered all over the Carolinas, with one in Tennessee.

While maybe not the architectural gems mentioned previously in this thread, I consider my ClubCorp membership a good bang for the buck.  I can play the ClubCorp courses and many partners (roughly 200 courses) two times each month for cart fee only (usually charged if walking).  Times are often limited so it's not perfect but with flexibility it's a pretty good setup.

Some of the higher quality courses include:
Pete Dye Golf Club
Firestone
Mission Hills
The Omni Resort Courses (La Costa, Bedford...)
You can view all courses here: http://www.clubcorp.com/Membership/Benefits-Finder (you'll have to view by location)

A significant portion of the other courses are big name architects.  Nicklaus and Palmer apparently made a good amount of money building ClubCorp courses.

To get the best bang for the buck you could look to join the lowest cost member club (it might be a dining club).

I believe that Quaker Ridge and Winged Foot have a reciprocal deal these days.  They are both in Westchester County N of NYC and are across the street from one another.  Not sure of the "terms"

That's a pretty great one and it makes sense given they are neighbors anyway. I don't know about other politics behind it, both Top 100 courses in great conditions and totally different.

Ian those are awesome but not exactly in the neighborhood, if you just happen to be in those areas however, then brilliant.

Great, so one question David. Possibly the deal of the century, can an International member at one of them get the same 10 pounds a round deal....?

A yes and this could become the most read thread in the history of GCA. ;-)

David D. -

I am 99% sure the answer is yes. And best of all, you can join Golspie GC as an Overseas Member for 200 pounds a year, with no joining fee.

I have been a member at Golspie since 2002. If you or anyone else is interested in more info, please feel free to PM me.

AND you would get to play Royal Dornoch for 20 pounds 3 times/yr.

What about any "locals" who are members of St. Andrews.
Doesn't that give you access to 7 courses?

Melbourne Sandbelt Clubs (RM, KH, Victoria, Metro, Commonwealth, Yarra Yarra, Huntingdale) have an arrangement where any member can play 1 round/year (not tightly policed) at each of the others for members guest green fee. Not utilised anywhere near as much as most non-Victorians would expect.

And as Brora, Golspie member there is the Braid Society list of courses where the reciprocal agreement is roughly 50% discount

That's right Ian, all 7 for 200 quid - though I tend to only bother with 45 of the holes - plus limited guest privileges. A reduced rate of 50 quid at Kingsbarns, and a 20 quid club day (if you are a member of one), too.

I used to know a chap who bought an Open Links Ticket for St Andrews.  He didn't belong to a local club nor live in/near St Andrews and he still could play all the courses for something like £500 for the year.  I expect the fee is much higher these days.

Yes, I was going to mention the James Braid Society/Association discount for members of one Braid course club who wish to visit another Braid course club.

A web search for the James Braid Course Association yields the following links for more information:

Having spent a lot of time in Ireland,  there is a group or courses collectively referred to as the North and West Coast Links.  These include the following:

1.  Connemara
2.  Carne
3.  Enniscrone
4.  Rosses Point
5.  Murvagh (aka Donegal Golf Club).
6.  Nairn and Portnoo
7.  Rosapenna
8.  Portsalon
9.  Ballyliffin
10  Portstewart
11.  Royal Portrush
12.  Ardcastle

I looked at a membership about four years ago at Donegal Golf Club and one of the benefits of being a member is that members get discounted rates (50 percent) at the other courses of the North and West Coast Links.  I joined a different club from this group and have been able to access discounted rates at five of the courses during my trips to Ireland.  I think Ennsicrone members get discounted rates at the other clubs.  I have not looked specifically at discounted rates extended to members of other clubs in the list.

Of these courses, Royal Portrush Dunluce is obviously the highest ranked, while Rosses Point has a Doak rating of 7 8 7 7.  Other courses get mostly rankings of 5 and occasionally 6.  The concentration of this many courses mostly in Mayo/Sligo/Donegal is appealing when you add in the remoteness of the area, craic, and ambience.

Information about annual fees and lifetime membership options can be found on club websites.
