Bells Used on Blind Holes

Does anyone have some photo examples of bells used on blind holes to let the group behind them know the players in front are out of harms way?  I've seen these on some U.K. courses...less in the States.  Hoping to keep my club from doing something stupid (installing a camera and video monitor on a Golden Age course on a blind hole).  Please help😉!

Unfortunately I do not have photos to share but I am fond of bells as they remind me of the first course I ever worked, Lake Bonaventure CC in Castlewood, VA.  Both the par 5 sixth and par 4 eighth had bells and there was always a sense of pride felt when a well struck tee shot came to rest beyond the bells.   The par 5 fifth hole at Southern Pines GC has a bell and I find it charming as it takes me back to my youth.


One other low frill alternative I've encountered to this method is a flag.  I don't recall the hole number but Link Hills CC in Greeneville, TN had a par 5 where players raised a bright colored flag to the top of a pole adjacent to the cart path, then lowered it after moving on from the blind landing zone.

Has there been an onslaught of issues there recently?  Or about the same as the last 100 years ... roughly zero?  Some people can't help themselves .. I feel for ya.

#7 at Otterkill CC in Campbell Hall NY has a bell. If it's not too cold tomorrow I'll go up there and take a photo.


The 13th hole at Enniscrone has a little light built into a dune straight down the hill from the tee before the dogleg. When you leave the tee you press a button to turn the light red. When you leave the green you press a button there to turn the light green

Number #12 at Flossmoor CC, just south of Chicago. Hole was built in 1899. Originally played as a 450+/- par five. First shot just short of a creek. Blind second over a large hill that slopes down from 130 yards all the way through to a bunker less green, which slopes away from the line of play as well. Today, a strong par four from about 420. Second shot is now the blind shot to the green that has been there from the beginning.


You ring the bell on the way to the 13th tee. Works great!

There are bells leaving the 7th green at Golspie (short par-4) and the 11th green at Tain (long par-4, the Alps/"Dolly Parton" hole).

Bayonet course in Monterey used to have a giant metal triangle on no. 11. Worked well.

Spot on Wags.  There has been no issues.  I personally find the addition of a bell somewhat intriguing.  I find the addition of a camera and monitor appaling.  Old people on a committee trying to be relevant.  Sign me up for the bell!

I would think that most old UK courses have at least one hole with a bell to alert following players that the way is clear.


I only know of one hole which has TWO bells - one for the blind drive and another for the blind approach...




...the 4th at Tenby.

A bit more low tech may be the use of a mirror on the tee.


In the fairway a bell does the job.  When low tech is available, its nearly always the best option. Plus, a bell is attractive.

Bells are a regular feature at courses in the UK.


Where I play most often the bells, and we have them on three holes (2xpar4, 1xpar5) have had to be moved forward twice in the last couple of decades to cope with the extra distance tee shots are going these days.


The traffic light at Enniscrone 13th-hole wasn't working when Buda was there in Sept.
