GW is looking great, although they continue to work on their master plan of redoing a few bunkers each year, so it may be torn up in places at the moment.  Other than the work, I'd say it's playing the best it has since Ross left the property.

Can't comment on current conditions at Triggs, as my one play was in 2005 or so...fun track though!

I played Triggs this summer and it was fantastic. My second time around (about six years separation) and I flat-out love the place. Here's the bit I put together on my site:

So I played 29 Holes here this past week and it was my favorite play of the year. A year that was jam packed with great courses.


Thoughts-
-Loved the maintenance- scruffy, firm, with a beautiful blend of native grass that didn't suffocate the playing corridors
-Beautifully rugged, tumbling par 4s
-Blind shots
-Reward for playing to correct sides of fairways
-!Variety!- uphill, downhill, flat, left to right, right to left, long, short, etc.
-great drive and pitch holes
-Even the long player has to smoke 2 long shots to hit the par 5s in two
-great internal contours and gradual slope
-HEROIC BLIND DRIVES-- LOVE THIS


Now go ahead and add in the vibe. The frugal ways of a municipal golf course only add to the authenticity and focus the player on why they are there; to play golf. The place literally smelled like my old childhood Nassau County, NY ice hockey rink (partly because of the grand fireplace in the 'ball room' of the spectacular clubhouse.

Thank you to golf professional- Scott Allen for hosting me. I showed up on the tail end of a wedding trip unannounced and early in the morning--introduced myself, and without hesitation Scott offered me professional courtesy and walked me to the first tee.

I agree with everything in this post, but want to ask a clarifying question: what would you consider to be the "drive and pitch" holes? I can't really think of one potentially other than 16. And even on 16, you are hitting an 80ish yard shot up a 20-30 foot hill.


The first, I think everyone will admit, is one of the weaker holes on the course by virtue of the flat land and flat green. I've smoked driver and still had 90-100 yards in.


The second could be a drive and pitch, but is ~360 yards from the back tee. I don't see many people hitting driver. Mostly I see 130-150 yard shots in.


Ditto the 11th (a great hole).

Ok, maybe I'm not defining "drive and pitch" correctly.


I have a new driver, and a little deeper coil going


But yea, I had less than 105 into-
1, 2, 6, 12, 16, 18
Also, there was very light wind, but for me it doesn't take away from the course as you had to hit a very good drive to put the wedge in your hand.


Which probably brings up another topic of a true drive and pitch hole-
