Where in the world is Joe Hancock?
« on: September 12, 2016, 10:52:23 AM »
Had to share this pic!

The place: Sunningdale Country Club (Scarsdale, NY). In clearing the site for the new par-3 17th, Joe seemingly met his match...a stump about as easy to extract as an impacted molar! Through sheer tenacity, Joe won the battle!

But good things happening at the Dale! Mike DeVries and Joe Hancock beginning work on the last four holes -- three and a half of which are original designs -- that will complete a very unique renovation project.

Stay tuned!

Michael - that reminds me of the scene from "Shane", and the big old tree stump on his farmstead that Joe Starrett (Van Heflin) has been trying unsuccessfully to uproot for years. But then, with his loving wife (played by the wonderful Jean Arthur) looking on, Shane (Alan Ladd) comes to lend a hand and together the two men, with nothing more than sweat and muscle and sheer determination, finally manage to rip that old stump from the ground.

All of which is to say: Joe makes for a passable Van Heflin, but what he needed was not machines or Mike Devries, but Alan Ladd!   (He already has Trixie, played by the wonderful Trixie)...

Btw, the cattlemen who are trying (with evil gunslinger Jack Palance) to get all the farmers off their land mockingly use a pejorative nickname for Joe Starrett and his ilk, i.e. "sodbusters".

I think that should be on his business card: Joe Hancock - Designer, Builder, Shaper, Renovator, and Sodbuster!

Joe - Did you do that with just that poor 88?

Jaeger -- what do you mean "just that poor 88"?  That's what I'm telling you -- the old days, it would've been "just" the muscles and will power of men like Shane and Joe Starrett!

Gosh...and people wonder why golf has never been the same since before Old Tom Morris read his first stories about the American frontier...

Ah, the glamorous profession of golf course construction.

Jaeger,

A Cat 316 excavator and a John Deere 700 bulldozer is all it took... I used the dozer after I experienced some leakage on the excavator. It, apparently, did not enjoy the abuse.

Peter,

Mike Moss likes to sit and watch all this construction activity. I am personally concerned about him, and am plotting a way to get him some professional help. Any advice?

 8)  Easy to understand how Joe gets his perspective...

Joe - I'm not sure,  but maybe Mike is under the mistaken impression that you carefully plan what you're doing. Maybe if you come clean and tell him that you're actually just bashing things around as hard as you can until they move he'll lose interest....

I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Tell him to leave his camera at home as documented evidence of of seemingly innocent OSHA violations can be damning. Oh, and stay safe my friend.

JC, John - thanks for the laughs...

I was going to type that your comedy is more 'hard edged' than mine, but in truth mine isn't comedy at all!

Those undergarment-age jokes always work....

I watch Joe for hours wrestle with this stuff just to see him at days end dismount his excavator, take his football helmet off, spit out his mouth guard and then declare, "that was fun!" #jealous!  ;D

Joe,

I have some experience tearing things up just around the corner from there.  It is some hard digging for sure, good luck!  I know for us, it was the land that decided what we could and couldn't do.  I guess it keeps things interesting.
