George Cup VI: September 24, 2016 @ Ballyhack Golf Club
« on: July 07, 2016, 11:34:14 AM »
GCAers:

Registration for George Cup VI at Ballyhack Golf Club is now open!

This year's event (27 holes plus dinner) takes place on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Ballyhack Golf Club in Roanoke, Virginia.  Golf is also offered on Friday, September 23 and Sunday, September 25 for anyone who wishes to play.

Eight on-site rooms are available.  Once those fill up, players will need to secure hotel reservations.  I am glad to make recommendations if needed; please note that Virginia Tech plays East Carolina the same day, which means availability will be limited as the date approaches.

2015 winner Scott Weersing received a pinflag and framed print, an etched milk jug, and a one-year Ballyhack membership.  Other past champions include:
  • 2014: Tommy Williamsen
  • 2013: Kevin Lynch
  • 2012: Andy Hughes
  • 2011: Jason Williams
This year's format will closely resemble past years (combination of team and individual point opportunities, multiple hole contests, The Quiz, etc.).  Each participant is asked to bring one hole prize (GCA-related, preferably).

To register for the 2016 George Cup, please visit http://goo.gl/forms/B8TUav6RWp2nO9o22

I look forward to answering any questions you have and to welcoming the 2016 field in a few short months.

The Delta Dental State Open of Virginia was played last week at Ballyhack.

The only big surprise to me is that they did not stretch out the course all the way to the tips but mixed up the tees including moving the tee up on no. 11 to a drivable 256 yards on the last day. There were three eagles.

Scott:

They played the course just under 7000 yards all three days.  About half the tees never moved during the three days.  Moving the tee up on #11 for the third round was by far the most adventurous move made with regards to the course setup.  #6 was played from the back tee all three days, and so were all four par fives.

I encourage George Cuppers to take a look at the course statistics (from Scott's post).  Might prove to be an advantage in The Quiz.

I was surprised to see all three FORWARD tees used on #3, with no day using the back.  That really changed the nature of that hole for a field of that caliber.

Tie breaker question for The Quiz.....  What George Cupper eagled #11 from the Red Tees?   ;D ;D

The answer to all George Cup trivia questions, no matter how implausible the feat, should always be: Kevin Lynch.

Well played Scott and congratulations. The best story, however, was 23 handicapper, Livingston Lewis, shooting 77 in the shamble with a triple on nine! Who says Ballyhack is tough?!?

Tommy,

Liv is actually an 18, but his strokes adjusted to 23 as a result of the slope rating.  Still, an incredible round of net 54!

Truly, the greatest story ever told.

So you play a shamble but keep individual player scores?  I've never seen that done before.  Seems hard to compare individuals across groups because each individual's score depends on the tee shots hit by others in the group.

I'm not sure any of us look at it that way. We just tee it up with whomever we are paired with. We all want to win, and was I irritated with my poor play, but it is a very fun event. We even have a ten question quiz that counts toward total points.

I enjoy shambles but have just never seen it scored that way.  Interesting.

Another great event. I have had the fortune of playing Ballyhack 30 or so rounds across four years and the course never disappoints. The visual intimidation and big numbers floating around every shot are offset by playability and how it rewards good shots. Anyone interested in modern architecture should strongly consider George Cup VII in 2017!

Having crashed and burned to last place with too many bad mistakes this year I am devoting the next 12 months to reclaiming George Cup relevance in 2017.

Awesome job Scott! So wish I could have joined all of you this year. I will attest that Livingston has game and can get it done. Sounds like he instantly shook off the rust! #gset54

Wade is great gentleman and host. If any of you guys can figure your way to Roanoke, keep a flexible calendar for the Fall of 2017.

With the extreme severity that is Ballyhack, the format makes sense.
