A road cut pre-existed the golf course. The PA Turnpike expanded it a bit. The old routings show a road at roughly the present location.

Very interesting. I wondered the same thing when I attended the 1994 US Open. Thanks for the update.

Did the club install additional walking bridges to alleviate backups?

Seems like very little. Rumor was #8 green needed rebuilt. Which it looks like it was after 1940, but it did not move! 


A rail line was always in that location, and still is on the 2-8 side.


 A single member at Oakmont has been rumored to have paid for the bridge as the USGA did not want another US Open there until it was built.

Story is he gave them a blank check and told them not to tell his wife how much. The USGA required the bridge to award them the tournament.

Ryan - are your postive the 8th green didn't move?

"The course, surprisingly, was largely unaffected by the Turnpike. Perhaps the most notable change that had to be made was moving the eighth hole’s green 10 yards to accommodate construction."

This topic came up when one of the featured groups played the 8th during the online coverage.  It was also noted by Geoff Ogilvy in the "State of the Game" podcast with Shackelford.  Ogilvy made the interesting comment that the 8th might be the easiest par 3 there because the green is less interesting than the rest and clearly not a Fownes original.  I would be curious to know how undulating the original green was for a long par 3 like this.

Well, that opens a can of fresh worms. Who wants to lay odds that the 8th green will be restored in some fashion before the next open? Is Stan still around? Any checks left?

Druckenmiller is worth between $4B and $5B, so he's got a few bucks to spare.

I joke with guests that our place shares an important feature with Oakmont:  the PA Turnpike.   


It borders our 5th hole at French Creek only about 250 miles east of Oakmont.
