Philadelphia Course Recommendations?
« on: April 22, 2016, 04:18:21 PM »
Hey everyone.

I'm heading out to Philadelphia to golf for the first time in early June. We've got 5 days for golf, and currently have rounds lined up at Merion and Philly Cricket - both of which I'm really excited about.

I know that Philadelphia is supposed to be an incredible city for golf, with lots of fantastic courses that have flown under the radar nationally.

Still working on that elusive PV invitation, but wondering what other courses in the area you'd recommend checking out?

Gulph Mills is one that's definitely on my list, but not real familiar with the area other than that and the more well known courses.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Perfect example of a course I've never heard of!

Looks like there are two there? One better than the other? What makes it worth playing?

Hmmm... invites to Merion & Cricket. What more do you need?

Yes extremely fortunate to have been invited to play both. But if I'm flying all the way across the country I want to make sure I get as much high quality golf in as I can!

Have 5 days for golf, so currently have 3 more open on this trip and figured this was the place to get the best recommendations for architecturally worthwhile courses.

Are you looking for recommendations or access? Two different things.

Are you looking for access to top courses so you can add them to your list?

If not Lulu(Ross) has a member for a day program- a fun course to play. Jeffersonville, a public course attibuted to Ross, is another option.

If you are seeking access, try Flynn courses since this area is the home of many- Manufacturers, Huntingdon Valley, Woodcrest, Rolling Green, Green Valley.

How did you miss Ross' Aronimink?

How about a day at Atlantic City CC( Flynn/Doak) and you can visit White House in A C for a good cheesesteak.  Also, Ross' Bay Course at Seaview.

Just recommendations. I think for the most part I should have access covered. That is unless someone wants to extend an invite to Pine Valley :)

Didn't mention Aronimink, as it was one I was working on, but wasn't confirmed. Just got an email back, looks like it's a go - so really excited for that one. Although historically, I haven't been in love with most of the Ross courses I've played.

@Steve Oh man, White House! Played at Galloway National just outside AC in October, and my friend that I was with insisted we stop there. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had.

It looks like from your website that one of your goals is to play Top100 courses. For access, do it privately.

In any event, play LuLu. All you need is a phone call.

Steve, yes it is a goal of mine. But I truly wasn't trying to use this post to get access, so I apologize if it came across that way.

I knew I'd have a day or two to play some lesser known courses, so just wanted to see if there were any collective favorites, as I've never golfed in the area.

I'll check out Lulu for sure!

Be sure to say hi to Dan Meersman at Philly Cricket for me. He is one of the finest young talents in golf. Be nice, he should be running Pine Valley by the time you're 40, if not something better that is.  I also wouldn't miss a chance to play Lehigh and take in some knowledge from Redanman.

Play the Olde course at Cobbs Creek.

I've played Cobb's Creek.  And I know it has many fans here.  I think it's an interesting layout but always in very marginal shape.  Might be good to play it before Merion, not after...

Lots of great suggestions so far and looks like you have a terrific itinerary.  A few more public recommendations are Glen Mills, Wyncote, Galen Hall (a bit of a drive but worth it) and Hershey West.  Woodcrest is now public as well.

If Cricket is not taking rounds, I'm sure McNally's is still serving Schmitters.   :)

If access isn't an issue (other than Pine Valley), you can't go wrong with any of the courses already mentioned.  My own recommendation would be to include Lancaster CC, Aronimink, Philly Cricket, Merion East and West (same day if you can) and either Rolling Green, Philly CC or Gulph Mills.

I've never had a Schmitter from McNally's, but you must get a cheesesteak from John's Roast Pork, Mama's, Tony Luke's or Jim's and avoid Pat's and Geno's.

Sean,
I believe you will quite enjoy the city of Brotherly Love, and the golf.
You could probably spend three weeks in that town and not exhaust all the quality golf options in the area.
While the temptation is often to pack as much golf as one can into a trip, you often end up in trunk slammer mode and lose the flavor of each locale.
Almost like that speed dating fad that quickly flamed out. That approach kind of cheapens the moment, and distinct memories kind of blur together.
Filter down to a manageable number. Leave time for some cultural and culinary sampling
 And enjoy each day!
Having done both the frenzied jaunt, and the sanity program on golf trips, the latter is usually more memorable and satisfying.
Have a blast!

"I said in a talk at the Dunhill Tournament in St. Andrews a few years back that I thought any of the caddies I'd had that week would probably make a good golf course architect. We all want to ask golfers of all abilities to get more out of their games -caddies do that for a living." T.Doak
