Shivas and Huckaby

Go somewhere else on this DG and talk about something you guys know about, like football players' SAT's or women's soccer.  This thread is for guys like Dan Kelly and Pat Mucci and Shivas' frikkin' sister and I who KNOW what it is like to have had a hole in one.....

First Hole-in-one was on the 201 yard par 3 3rd at Polo Fields during Men's League.  By the time I finished the round, the beer cart girl handed me a $600 tab.  One of my buddies had phoned the pro shop and I was buying drinks before I even left the course.

Last Hole-in-one was on the 14th (Short) at Plum Hollow.  Bruce Matthews and I were debating whether the hole was tough enough and after discussing it for several minutes, I sunk the shot.

Just for Shivas and Tom (Since they both know her) - I also had the pleasure of watching my wife get a hole-in-one over the ocean this past Thanksgiving at Manele Bay.  They have a female pro and she gave my wife the flag as a souvenir (Manele has really cool Wind Kites as Flags).
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

Live what down?

Oregon played a great game and Michigan did not.  The killer was that, even with all of the mistakes, they still had the ball in the last two minutes with a chance to win.  Craig Krenzil would have pulled out the game but Navarre did not and that is why he has never been beloved by the Michigan faithful.  Michigan will go 12 - 2, play on New Years Day, and finish in the top 10 again.  That is my definition of Consistent Excellence.

Shivas,

A few weeks ago I started 2, 2, 3 at GCGC.
Four under after the first four holes, and sadly, even par, standing on the tenth tee.

I should have played 17 and 18 in and become a GCGC legend like Woody Platt, unfortunately, he was smarter then me, and it seemed like such a lovely day, and I thought that my game was back, so I wanted to continue.  Big mistake.

Mrs. Wigler deserves to make an ace, just for putting up with Dave for all these years.

So maybe the golf gods are fair after all...

Which gets me back to the question of where did shivas and I go wrong?

And Rich, well... I am so used to being ridiculed for being aceless, your words are like background noise.  Did you say something?  ;)

Since everone has chimed in...here it goes...

I had two holes in one in back to back years at local public courses when I was 12 and 13 years old.  I then proceded to go on a 20 year "hole in one" hiatus until...2 years ago...

I holed a five iron on the fly during our club championship final at Little Mill CC (NJ) #5, 190 yds, Blue Nine.

And this year at the end of July...I was playing in an annual better ball tournament with the esteemed Chet Walsh at Philmont CC (Huntingdon Valley,PA)...I knocked in a 7 iron on  the 3rd hole of the South course during a first round tournament record 63.  We couldn't see it go in because the green sits uphill from the tee, but it was great to walk up to the green and see nothing!!

During my many years of golf I have been witness to some very strange "hole in one" occurrences...

I saw all 4 holes in one during a 6 group stretch at the US Open at Oak Hill in 1989.

I was playing a game of WOLF in college with a foursome where the person called Wolf on the tee of a par 3, and proceeded to hole his tee shot only to be halved by the last member of our group who put his tee shot in the hole to top him!

Shivas...you need to come play some golf with me...maybe then your streak will end...

Regarding reply #35 in this thread, it seems as though the eagle has landed (I knew it was only a matter of time)! ;D ;).  Lest we not forget Mr. Huckaby's 2 putt birdie on the same hole in the morning match to clinch yet another point for the west squad.

Cheers,

Brad:

Hell, the birdie in the am was the least I could do for the team.  Some big blonde oaf of a partner I had must have been very tired carrying me all morning.   ;)

Glad to read you are safe and sane as well.  Maybe tonight we all get some sleep?  ;D

Huck,

You actually get ridiculed for being aceless when so few have ever done it?  Those people need to get a life.  Wait a second, my dad did it with me on a par 3 course playing once a year about 20+ years ago, and my mom had one a couple of years ago....

Maybe it's not so uncommon.. ::)  I've never had one and don't care that I never have.  Other, more important goals than that, like improving one's game and having fun with good partners.

Three times I've been on the 16th green at my home club while the group ahead of me had an ace.  Once couldn't be seen because it was too dark.

Yes, it'll be an early night TH, particularly since the Raiders will be dead and buried by the middle of the third quarter...

That's just what I was figuring, Doug - just like last year, the 4th quarter will be very missable.

That is, unless you like to see a plethora of Raider points...

I forgot to post my wife's aces. Her first was at Commonwealth National on the short 8th hole. Her second was this past winter on the 16th at Quintero in AZ. She can be called Mrs.acer2x.

My only ace, so far that is, occurred on the 8th hole at Rustic Canyon and was a knock down 9 iron that bouced once and went in the hole. Previously I had holed out twice on par 3's for par after shanking my first tee shot.

The hole in one is SOOOO much luck. I have two, both on stellar, Architectural irrelevant, courses that no one hear has ever heard or played:

#1 Victor Hills #17 North Course 135 yrds PW

#2 Canandaigua Country Club #5 143 yrds PW (same club)

The best part of these was the company. Both came playing w/  some life-long friends. Buying them drinks w/ them and all others made it great.

It's been a dry spell for me since 1980 as I had four up to that time. My most memorable was on the 8th hole at Port Royal in Bermuda. Not only do I love the island, but I love playing golf there. My Father In Law and I had been joined at the first tee with a couple of guys, one of whom also had his new bride with him and she had with her...a camera! So, not only did I get the thrill of watching my 165 yard 6 iron roll in to the hole  ;D, I got photographic evidence of walking to the green and pulling the ball from the cup. It also reminds me of how we used to dress in those days. Madras slacks, white belt...Oh, my. The scores on the hole that day were interesting as well. 1,2,3 and 4. So now I have my name on one of the Bermuda Cedar placques in the club house which pleases me about as much as anything I have ever accomplished in golf.

Concur.  That is one incredible shot.  There can't be more than a handful of aces ever done on that hole.

I have played Victor Hills!  But I could swear 17 is a short par 4!  Now that would be a reeeally cool hole in one...:)

I have recounted this before, but am compelled to re-tell as I obviously am not yet over my guilt.

Many years ago I was playing in a flighted two man scramble on the West Tennessee Fried Chicken Circuit that spawned celebrated mid-amateurs Tim Jackson and Danny Green.   My partner and I went on a hot streak, clearly playing well above our heads in the qualifying round.  My partner, an oustanding player in his own right, but not above sandbagging if the situation called for it, suggested we needed to par in to avoid the championship flight.  On a 135 yard par three with the pin front left, he insisted that I overclub and direct an 8-iron to the back right corner of the green.  This in and of itself was humorous to me since I rarely hit the ball where I intend to anyway.

I proceed (subconsciously I hope) to hit a fat pull that one hops into the hole.  We just stared at each other dumbfounded while our opponents whooped and hollered.

I played with this partner one more time and he pulled the same stunt again.  I told him I would have none of that and called him a cheater.  Needless to say, we haven't played together since.

I assume I received my just reward by having an ace to be totally ashamed of.  Where was the moral beacon of GCA when, as a young man, I so desperately needed it?

Shamed,

Mike

Plainfield CC #6 135 yards.

Didn't see the ball roll into the cup, so when my playing partners and I reached the green we searched for the ball for a few minutes in the rough around the green.  Finally, my friend looks in the cup and asks "anyone playing a Titleist #2?"

Needless to say, we haven't played together since.

As I have observed in my column on numerous occasions: That "needless to say" was hardly needless to say!

It's too bad that, the next time he pulled that stunt, you didn't immediately tee it up and ace another one. That would've shut him up fast!

Haven't read the other responses yet, but a quick question first:

Do you other guys who've had one (or more) step up to every par 3 tee thinking "I wonder if I'm gonna get another one here?"

How about you guys who haven't had one? Do you wonder if it's your time?

--------

This will come as a shock to anyone who played with me last weekend :), but I have one. Bet no one on board has even heard of the course: Hartman's Deep Valley, about 30 minutes north of the Burgh. #6, 185 yards on the card, markers at the front of the box, hole up front, a club & a half downhill all conspired to make my 8 iron look pretty cool in the paper. ;D

Now on to read the others...
Big drivers and hot balls are the product of golf course design that rewards the hit one far then hit one high strategy.  Shinny showed everyone how to take care of this whole technology dilemma. - Pat Brockwell, 6/24/04
