There was never better tv golf.  I spent many a happy hour with my late dad watching those shows.  Demaret and Sarazen, what a couple of gents.

Those shows made me want to play golf around the world. I was a kid when they were shown and I still enjoy them. Watching them made me curious about architecture. They were great.

Watching Seve and Paul at St Andrews, with Ben Crenshaw on the mike. Jack Whitaker reminds us that this Christmas morning will be the 140th anniversary of the death of young Tom Morris.

Greens this morning were all stimping around 8, maybe 9.  Lots of chatter as the acushnet got to within 3 feet

I watched some of Arnold Palmer vs Chi Chi Rodriguez vs Gay Brewer, Jr. at El Conquistador in Puerto Rico. I looked up the course because a few of the holes looked pretty interesting. I couldn't find much other than Arthur Hills redesigned it in the early 90s. Anyone know anything about the original?

My DVR is set to record several of these (my wife currently has on the holiday music channel and I have a few NBA games to watch this afternoon and evening that I won't miss).

The Faldo vs. Norman match was played at Sunningdale, wasn't it? We'll find out this afternoon.

Nelson vs. Littler at Pine Valley right now.  This is better than any non-major professional tournament that took place this year.

Take a very close look at where Littler's second shot ends up, then take a very close look at where've plays his third shot from.

There are a few of these SWWG episodes plus others on Youtube. The above one's I'd particularly like to see are the Thomson-Player match from Royal Melbourne and the Cotton-Sarazen one from St Andrews but neither are on Youtube. Shame. Anyone know of any links to other sources for viewing them?

I was allowed to change the channel to the Pine Valley episode for 10 minutes during the Disney commercial parade. Great stuff.

It seems they recreate where shots land for dramatic effect. I saw one of Nelsons balls go into the woods and I doubt cameras back then could have actually tracked that shot. It looked like someone tossed the ball as they filmed it. Maybe Littler played it where it actually ended up, not where we saw it end up?

Thomas, no help on links, but watching those two matches was incredible.
Royal Melbourne was a fiery brown and yellow, and watching Thomson was awesome.
Cotton Sarazen was great to see TOC in a much rawer(IMHO better) state, though it was clearly not in a drought condition as it was quite green with a much less manicured cut.
For whatever reason, the contours of the course seemed to stand out more with longer patchy colored urf?

Still haven't ever seen the Mickelson /Toms match at Pine Barrens.  Never is one of the replays.

Favorite is the Pine Valley footage.  Was there ever better television coverage of the course?

Would be nice to see these episodes sometime. The episodes I mentioned above would I presume provide great examples of F&F and ground game golf and seeing Peter Thomson in particular play this kind of golf on a great course would be terrific. Golf played by a master craftsmen.

Does the Golf Channel have a watch-it-later capacity (like the BBC-iPlayer function)?

I have the Nelson/Littler match on VHS and watch it once a year. I hurts every time I watch Littler play number five.
I watched the Sarazen/Cotten match at TOC.  couldn't believe how slow the greens were.

Not on this 'rota' but Nicklaus vs Snead from Pebble in the mid 60s. On a par 3 on the front, Snead (in his 50s) hits 4 iron and is long, while Jack (in his 20s) hits 6 iron and comes up short. Don't know what it 'means' but striking nonetheless.

Well, that Pine Barrens one hasn't been shown in a number of years.  But I know I've seen it twice.

Let's hope somebody at TGC reads GCA and puts it back on!

I watched 7 in a row on Christmas Day. I truly wish the series still ran today, having today's players playing for $100,000 to win. I know they'd never do it, but what they will never understand is how much fun it would be to watch them back years later.
