Golfing Highlight Of 2015
« on: December 11, 2015, 03:54:55 AM »
We are well into the final month of the year.  So it is time for the highlight of the year thread. Mine was a trip to the UK but primarily Scotland. Started at the Berkshire Red thanks to Brian Sheehy. Turned out to be way better than expected. Then on to Cruden Bay, Royal Aberdeen, Trump Scotland, Castle Stuart twice, Royal Dornoch twice, St Enodoc twice. Great trip, amazing golf.

Second highlight was taking my grandson aged 9 to the driving range. Instead of being a dangerous madman we had a concentrated and precise boy who had a great time.

Please put down what you think. No rules.

I'd never thought about a trip combining Dornoch and St.Enodoc before - that must be 700 miles+.

The golfing highlight for me was a spring trip to Formby with Sean Arble, Tony Muldoon, Mark Rowlinson, Duncan C, David Davis and others. Apart from two terrific courses and some great company, it was also my first golf since heart surgery the previous December.

A) Playing a couple of rounds at brutal/challenging Royal County Down and then playing wonderful Portmarnock in the company of a most gracious host.
B) Making two regulation par-3's in one 18-hole round in a big wind on the tiny/evil 8th/17th at Burnham & Berrows Channel course (potential life time golfing highlight!)

Shooting 76 around TOC including holing out from 200 yards on the 14th for an eagle, (I topped my fairward wood second 30 yards!).

Also, Old Town Club and re-playing Tobacco Rd.

And then the drinks after shooting 76 around TOC!

It was such a great year for meeting new people. I rounds in with golfers from 4 different continents, aged mid-70s to early teens. It is always fun to trade stories and hear a bit about their lives and how golf fits in.

For a single round, I can't think of a better moment than a post-round drink on the porch at Sunningdale after my first go on the Old. I tried to soak in every moment, but it still didn't last long enough. Lunch at Rye and seeing the historic links is a close second.

2015 was a bad year for golf for me, with a dodgy knee, sore hips and several skin surgeries that kept me sidelined too much. I did have a very good trip to Scotland with the highlight a round at Leven with th genial and jovial host, Martin Bonnar, when I had a chance to meet Niall Carleton who actually reached the monster 18th in two, and visit with Rich Goodale.  Also played the Eden course for the first time, loved the convoluted greens but not so much the heinous par 4 at the far end of the course with the pond.  A week in Scotland is good for the soul, especially with Mr. Whitaker driving!

- Playing St. George's Hill with my dad in August

- Winning my first individual tournament since 2011, on the fourth playoff hole, after having shot my career competitive low round in the first round, after waiting two weeks because the original final round date was rained out and rescheduled.

My first two experiences playing "dirt" golf were highlights for me.  First, at The Loop at Forest Dunes with Mr. Doak, and GCAers Jim Colton, Tom Dunne, and John Kirk.  And second, on the more finished Sand Valley with GCAer Chuck James.  Great experiences with good dudes.

That would have been my pick by a mile until last weekend, when I first experienced the Reverse Jans.  What a panic that was!

This was the year when it really hit home for me that, at its heart, golf is not a game of strokes, swings, or even courses.  Golf is a game of good times with good people.

Played in matches between European, Australian and American Society of Golf Architects
Played Sunningdale New, Berkshire Red, St. George's and Royal Cinque Port
Turned 50 on the opening day, with all the architects singing me Happy Birthday
With every golf development bubble, the end was unexpected and brutal....

My golfing highlight was clearly the Midwest Mashie in Minnesota. Great weekend of golf with old and new friends.

A few moments stand out:

Hitting it to a foot on 2 and hitting the pin on 15 at Prairie Dunes while playing with a pair of the most accommodating and friendly locals I've ever met.

A drunken night-putting contest at Wolf Run that lasted until 2am, with a Golden Tee nightcap.

The Minnesota Midwest Mashie. Seven courses in six days with incredible weather, great teammates and opponents, and a repeat East victory (no thanks to me!).

An unexpected round at Holston Hills after mentioning to a good friend of mine that I'd be in town for a night. He sent me a message a few days before the visit telling me when to show up for our tee time. It was the first I'd heard of him even trying to get us one, and the course and company were both excellent.

The first 26 holes of my local club championship, after which I stood second in my flight before yanking one OB on the ninth tee and nearly killing a poor girl walking her dog. It went downhill from there, but those first 26 were fun.

Playing with an old friend at Colorado Golf Club and listening to the thunder in the distance after every hole trying to gauge whether we were still safe or not. We finished just as the horn blew and went into the clubhouse and watched the downpour roll across the course while we had lunch.

And finally...

An unexpected fourball match at Cherry Hills with three PGA professionals. They boasted Walker Cup, Masters, US Open, and PGA Championship appearances between them, while I boasted a few Midwest Mashie appearances. We played off scratch from the tips and I broke 90 and contributed a couple of holes to a hot partner, who carried us the rest of the way. It was an incredibly fun day on a truly great classic layout.

It would have to be my "Royal Ace" on #10 at Royal Dornoch. ;)

Pretty simple here. Getting the chance to play with old friends over the past couple of weeks. Where we played was irrelevant (though CDS Ocean and Chileno Bay aren't chopped liver) as just getting to play again with the guys that owned a couple of the courses I grew up on  (35 years later) was quite special.

All the more special when you wlak off the last hole with guys you've played 1000 rounds with wondering "how many more times will we get to do this?" knowing the answer is... not many.

Yep, sometimes the course and its pedigree simply does not matter.

Ed,
Stayed in Dornoch, played at Castle Stuart, then drove to Aberdeen. Stayed over night, then flew to London, drove to Padstow the second day. St Enodoc was great.  My wife wanted to see Port Izaac, the setting for Doc Martin. Who was I to complain.

Keith, thanks very much for your concern.  The back is ok.  Got to make the most of the time I have got. Next check is January.

Getting back to playing golf after breaking my Talus and Calcaneus in 2014!  Walked 27 in one day last year.  Also competed in the 5th major.

Best shot of my year, tee shot on #1 at the 5th Major playoff.

A great trip to PEI and Nova Scotia, seeing Highland and spending three days at Cabot.  During the trip we spent a couple wonderful nights at the beach bonfire at Crowbush Cove, watched my dad score his second career hole-in-one (CL #17), got buzzed by the RCAF at Cabot Cliffs, and shot my career low of 65 (CL, middle tees) on the last day, although we still lost the match because our 9 and 4-capper (my brother) opponents shot 76 and 71 themselves!

A nice cap to my year a couple weeks after the trip, a weekend that involved rounds at Maidstone, Somerset Hills, Ferry Pt., and CC of Fairfield...and scored well: 74/68/73/74!

2016 will bring some changes to my life...namely a second kid due in June...the main question is, have I passed my golf prime at age 34?
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Spent 5 days outside London, playing just Sunningdale Old and New--over and over.  The best non-links golf in the UK!  I don't need anything else.

The Walking Golfers Society of Tennessee Gathering was the highlight of the year for me.  It was a pleasure to play two fine golf courses (Holston Hills and Lookout Mtn) and have people from 12 different states make the journey.  Both courses have a great culture and their own unique strengths.  I very much enjoyed the opportunity to get to know John Stiles better, for he is someone we all can look up to.  I would recommend to any new GCAers to attend any gathering posted on the board for fellowship and good fun is had by all.
