Pebble Beach Restoration?
« on: September 25, 2015, 07:51:55 PM »
I was watching the Champions Tour event from Pebble Beach and they said the 17th green had been restored in the sense that the bunkers were redone and the green expanded back to its original size.  Lanny Wadkins also suggested that a number of greens could use such a restoration to bring them back to their original size, especially considering how much play the course gets.

Anyone know anything further about this and do you agree that the greens need to be restored back to their original size?

Or was Lanny Wadkins factually incorrect about 17?

Jerry -

There was a thread here several months ago about the changes to the 17th green at Pebble. I will see if I can find it. Found it!

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,61038.0.html

It was also mentioned on Geoff Shackelford's website. Here:

P.S. My guess is there are a number of other greens at Pebble that have gotten smaller over the years. The problem is, when you are charging $500 a round, it is hard to present your course as "a work in progress." ;)

Jerry,

I'm not so sure that Lanny or most others know what the original sizes were, especially since none of them ever played the original greens.

Hence, to what size should they be altered ?

#9 green was done a while ago.  #17 completed recently.  #14 is scheduled for next year.  I think no others are planned.  I heard Lanny say that, and I think he is wrong about other greens needing restoration.

Heard Crenshaw talking about Cypress Point, PB, etc. and the woman who worked with Mackenzie there as well as at ANGC - really interesting.  Have to get the book - I think it is called "A Woman in a Man's World. "

Mary Hollins - Champion in a Man's World is the book.  Looks fascinating.

Bunkers right of 5 green getting a new edge and sod in June.  I've never seen bunker edging done this way, can't say I'm a fan of the aesthetic it creates, either.  Anyone else seen this?

It's done up here on occasion, its just a temporary edge to help the sod knit and avoid sand contamination.
Think of it like bunker boards.

Not a fan personally because I find you get soil contamination.

With every golf development bubble, the end was unexpected and brutal....

Don't be fooled by the word restoration. The decision makers at PB have never shown any interest in restoring anything to original, or, respecting those artists that contributed to it becoming one of the great west coast venues.

# 5 is a recently designed/built hole and should not be associated with any of the original greens.

Isn't this 4, not 5?

And it's Marion Hollins, not Mary.

Marion Hollins.  Without her there would be no Pasatiempo; Cypress Point would be a much different golf course; and Bobby Jones would never have discovered Alister Mackenzie for ANGC.  And a whole lot more!

Don't forget Aptos. Her greens there should be a text book for any student.
