Your Top 10 GB&I Courses Under £50
« on: August 05, 2015, 09:04:52 AM »
I had an interesting email the other requesting info on cheap golf.  This chap wanted to know what were my top 10 courses under £50 in GB&I that I thought were good shouts for Top 100 GB&I.  He wanted to know based only on quality...nothing more.  I was quite surprised I couldn't come up with 10!  I stuck with the approach of no twilight rates, special deals etc etc...In fact, I only came up with 3 (Brora has raised its rate to just hit about £50 on average  :P ) that I thought were comfortable top 100.  My other 5 (I didn't have ten in my personal list) offerings are very borderline and even with my enjoyment for these courses if I had more experience these probably wouldn't make my top 100.

Kington
Perranporth
Silloth on Solway

Cleeve Cloud
Portrush Valley
Carnoustie Burnside
Cavendish
Cumberwell Park Orange

Given the current Euro exchange rate of 1.43, then Carne - even at full rack rate - would qualify.

Thats a dangerous game  :D , but I do think Carne is comfortably top 100 GB&I.  I am not sure about the new 9 business though  ;) Will there be a 9 hole rate and if so, which 9 will stand alone?   It could well be that 9 holes on that property could be top 100 as well.

Maybe not Top 100, but contenders for Top 100-150:

Brora
Golspie
Tain
Duff House Royal
Fraserburgh
Boat of Garten

At least when you book through BRS (or whatever their online system is) the 18-hole rate at Aberdovey is current 47. That course has to very comfortably fit in the Top 50 whatever, surely.

Down the tracks at Harlech nowadays the rates are a bit more dear. I believe it's 57.50 for 18 holes although the 36-hole deal for 85 is well worth it. Royal St. Davids also makes very attractive dormy+golf deals if you want multiday. Even a single in a single room can keep the average for 36 holes plus lodging over a 2-night/3-day stay to well under 100 per day.

But anyway, I think Aberdovey is a definite add to your list.

Aberdovey is £49.50 for 18 holes before 2pm, £37.50 after 2pm. Day rate is higher.

No, the man said 18 holers.  His reason was more time to drink and spend money on other stuff.  Sounds fair enough unless you are a wingnut.

David

I wonder if Fraserburgh is top 100...the £45 normal daily fee certainly qualifies.

I wouldn't have thought Golspie, Boat or Tain make top 100 status...not in my estimation anyway. I wouldn't know about Duff...some speak very highly of it.

Yes, Aberdovey is out...just like Brora with its pricing averaging out to higher than £49 for daily play.  But both would make my top 100 with ease.

Bob...I like Gullane #2 a lot, but do you really think its top 100 GB&I?  It wouldn't make my list and I don't recall it on other lists.

This is a hard task!  I don't think there are 10 courses under £50 which are top 100 GB&I.  That is a sobering and sad realization.  Golf is too bloody expensive!

Sean,

Aberdovey does not average more than 50 bucks. Right this moment nearly every single day in August and September has morning tee times bookable online for 47 on all days except Saturday. And afternoons every day including Saturday for 38. Saturday mornings are reserved for member play.

Sean,

From what I can see, 18 holes at Aberdovey are always less than £50. It is only the daily rate that is above £50. Brora 18 hole rate averages above £50 but Aberdovey maximum 18 hole rate is £49.50. It's a hard / impossible task even without using the daily rate!

Did he specifically exclude the twilight rate as this will bring a number of courses into the equation?

This is a very sad state of affairs!

Twilight rates would more than double the number of courses I would guess. I like playing golf in the evening!

St. Enodoc is £45 twilight rate. I know Huntercombe is £40 as I'm thinking of playing one evening next week. I'm sure there are many more...

Sean,

I don't know what Aberdovey's deal is with their rack rates that are 10 pounds or so above the online ones. My one round there I called ahead and reserved a tee time on the phone and paid on the day. They charged me the Internet rate. Not sure who would be charged the higher published "green fee".

Then again, that same week at Harlech they actually charged me less for my package deal of dormie+golf than the quoted price so perhaps the fact my wife's great-great-great-great-great grandfather was supposedly minor Welsh nobility gave me some favorable pricing karma  8)

Thomas,

I thought about Goswick which is comfortably in on price but I'm not sure it makes Top 100, much as I love it.  Southerness comes in at exactly £50 for a round and does, I think, make Top 100.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Mine.  Though that's obviously a less desirable listing than most.

Once you mention twilight rates then winter rates and comp rates apply.  Next thing you know folks will say if you knock on the back door at 2:12pm Ol Johnny will answer door.....slip him a fiver and yer away.

David

Kington doesn't make top 10 in Herefordshire!  I am guessing only Silloth and Carne would make an actual published top 100 list.

So we have

Kington (just for David)
Silloth
Carne
Perranporth
Aberdovey

I'm one who speaks highly of Duff House Royal but I wouldn't put it in top 100. Long time ago when Golf World published a book "Top 1,000 Courses UK&I" Silloth was always the top of the list for "affordable" golf section which from memory was set at £50 even then.

It seems to me that your punter is being a bit lazy in that he's expecting you to do something he could readily do himself which is get a top 100 list and check them out on the internet to see which if any are below £50. I think a more interesting question would be what are your favourites for under £50 ? If that was the question then DHR would definitely be on there as would Forfar, Elgin, Boat of Garten and several more from that neck of the woods.

I guess it seems surprising that this is so surprising.  I wouldn't have thought that 10% of the best GB&I has to offer would be priced so low  ???

If you had a treasure of a course that was so good why wouldn't you want to price it accordingly? Wouldn't the value golf selection be more of the domain of the somewhat lesser quality but still good and fun to play courses?

Not saying it's a relevant comparison but I wonder how many of the top 100 u can play courses in US are under $75?

Another interesting question would be how many of those top 100 UK&I courses could you readily become a member of without having to be on a waiting list, without having to be proposed and without having to pay a joining fee that is a multiple of the annual subs ?

I suspect Silloth would come into that category and perhaps a few more.

Askernisk

I've seen it on a couple of top-100 lists - only £35 per day - might cost a few £ to get there though!

Anyone ever looked into hiring a smallish private plane and a few GCA folk clubbing together to meet the cost of a wee trip to Askernish? Might be less expensive if the pilot were a golfer! :)
