Michael,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I have to say, based purely on the few pictures, I think it looks like a joy to play.

Thanks, Michael.

Interesting that it took a real estate developer (egad!) to describe Tom's talents/strengths better and more succinctly that I've ever read before, i.e. his "assuredness in the links discipline".

I wonder if Mr. Rohrstaff is the norm in New Zealand, or if he is as unusual a developer there as he would be here.

Peter -

Yes, an interest way to put things.

I also thought Tom's comment on his routing process was interesting:

“Once a golf course routing is finished, we start building holes in some sort of sequence that makes sense for construction purposes, and we pretty much never walk the course in order from one to eighteen until it’s ready to open,” Doak explained. “So, what I appreciated most about Tara Iti during this recent visit was the pacing and rhythm of it."

From what Tom has told me the developer if very very golf oriented and that the course is priority number 1.
A friend of mine played there pre opening and said it was a spectacular venue, played very firm and fast and the pictures he took were equally as spectacular as those shown in the article.
Reminded me a little of early Cypress with all that sand splash everywhere.

Not sure exactly who Mr. Rohrstaff is, but the course is the vision and resources of Richard Kayne from Los Angeles.  Founder of a private equity investment firm.  Rohrstaff must be the guy on the ground in NZ.

Ric Kayne, a friend and founder of Kayne Anderson (Securities business) is Tom's primary client here.

Conceived from years of looking out over his backyard onto the 6th & 5th holes at Riviera, it was Ric's dream to find and build a special course. Tara Iti is it. Ric is a terrific human being and not likely to ever step into the spotlight of the press to describe his involvement. Reccently, he remarked how great it was to have worked with Tom and how much he learned from him.

Yes, Mr Kayne was my client, and a pleasure to work with.  Mr Rohrstaff is in charge of developing the adjacent lots ... there are only 25 of them, and none between the golf course and the beach, which should be a fair indication of Ric's priorities here.

The course turned out wonderfully and I think it might lift my overall batting average on oceanfront sites, which was pretty high before this!

I have been fortunate to play the first seven holes at Tara Iti and they are as good as the comments above.  I was also taken around the site of the remaining holes and it is not hard to believe they will be even better.

It is a wonderful place. Ocean views, secluded and nothing to get in the way of the game.  If you get the chance to play, it will be worth the effort.

Had a good walk around a couple of weeks ago on the back nine. Coming along very nicely.
Another fantastic asset to New Zealand Golf Tourism. And with a couple more course rumoured in the Central Otago Region its going to be looking pretty good in 5 years.

This course is going to be private and not sure how easily the access will be for the golf tourism business.

With that said, Ash is spot on with his assessment.

Rees:

The guest policy as I understand it will be similar to Sand Hills:  non-members will be able to make a one-time visit by writing to the club and making arrangements in advance, based on availability to stay on-site.  The last time I talked to Mr. Kayne, he seemed to think it would be ok to let visitors stay for multiple days / multiple rounds if they want; you just won't be able to come back again unless you join.

It seems to me that arrangement will suit a high percentage of the people who go to Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs now on their once-in-a-lifetime trip to New Zealand ... although demand for Tara Iti may be higher based on the limited availability of rooms.

I don't know that photos of Tara Iti will be splashed all over NZ golf marketing the way they do for Jack's Point and Cape Kidnappers, but that's really not necessary anyway.  And we'll have some good pictures if they want to use one  ;)

Many of us made that "once in a lifetime" trip about 3 trips ago.  ;D

Fascinating they don't experience the whole until all the holes are nearly completed. Never knew that.

I just can't express how happy I am that I didn't include NZ or Tasmania on my Australian trip a few years ago. This place looks amazing! Could it be the best in NZ? End of next year, I'm on it so please just a call out to all archies to quickly finish all amazing courses in this area (that are to be built in my lifetime) before then. Thanks in advance!

Nothing worse than having to keep making these trips of a lifetime annual events.

This place is seriously good.

Indeed, it may not end up being splashed over our marketing materials but I am positive it will become a staple in the world top 100.

Best in NZ? I'd say yes - but those more intimately connected with Cape Kidnappers will know for sure.

What grasses have been employed at Tara Iti?

Hi Matthew,

100% fescue I think.

You have got to get back to NZ to see this course.

With a few Renaissance Cup participants spending last week in NZ, and this week in Australia, word is starting to spread regarding the splendour of Tara Iti. And many who have played the course are speaking in superlatives. I look forward to more discussion on GCA regarding what seems to be another of the world's greatest courses...

Matthew:

They should have had a good time:  we had three perfect days of weather, and I have never in my life played a golf course in better condition.

The reviews of the course were not all on the same page.  A couple of friends didn't think the course belongs in my top five, and a couple of others said they thought it was the best I've designed.  The best compliment so far is from Greg Turner, who paid his own money to join the club.

There were about a half-dozen GCA posters who played in the Cup -- Ran, Joe A., Jeff Lewis, John Kirk, Michael Goldstein, Ash Towe, Jeff Warne --  so perhaps your post will draw out a few of them to explain in more detail.  I just hope they continue to limit the number of photos they post, so people will continue to be surprised when they get there.  Funnily enough, though, I had three golf photographers at the Renaissance Cup [Jo Ann Dost, Larry Lambrecht, and Gary Lisbon], but I still don't think I've seen many photos that do justice to the scenery around the course.

Tom,
You write "....but I still don't think I've seen many photos that do justice to the scenery around the course."

I have just perused the photos available at the legacy web site below and if these don't do "... justice to the scenery..." then Tricia and I are in for a right royal treat when we get there in the next twelve months!!

Did the link in the original post work for everyone? It took me to the GCA.NET home page, which is not too distant from the actual article, which should link from the one posted above.
