Cinderella Story/Tin Cup--Dornoch version
« on: June 16, 2015, 08:43:46 AM »
Jimmy Gunn from Dornoch just got into the US Open as first alternate.  Jimmy has been grinding on the the mini-tours after turning pro and leaving Scotland at age 27, seven years ago.  He is a helluva player with a lot of grit.  Anybody out there who loves the underdog as much as I do, please give this guy your support.

A bit more background:

Since he just got the call Sunday, he hasn't had the practice rounds many others have had.  It would be an amazing story!

Joel -

Since Jimmy Gunn grew up playing and caddying at Dornoch for many years, my guess his has likely played and seen more links golf than at least 90% of the golfers in the field. He has got that going for him.

To add to the feel good factor, his sponsor is flying Jimmy's parents out to Washington today.

Jimmy's tied with Rory Mac at +2, in 52nd place.  Hope they both make the cut.

Jimmy actually caddied for our group at Dornoch when we were there back in 2003.  Great guy, we had fun hanging out with him at the bar afterwards.  Fingers crossed that he is able to put a good score up today and make the cut!

In the clubhouse at +5. Just needs the field to back up just a touch.
Edit - Now it is up to amateur Nick Hardy, who is currently #3, through his 15th hole (#6) as he is finishing on the front nine.

Re-edit. Hardy bogeyed his final hole, to finish at +5, and that moved the final cut line to +5.  The gunner is in for the weekend.

The Gunner finished birdie-birdie-birdie to stay at +5.  He's already in the top-40 and will likely get further up the leader board as the day evolves.

Congrats to Jimmy Gunn for shooting two even-par rounds over the weekend and finishing the tournament +5 (72-73-70-70). Right now he is a top-30 finisher and will likely pick up the biggest check of his career. This is certainly the biggest event with the strongest field in which he has ever played.

All those years of playing links golf certainly came in handy. ;)

P.S. He tied Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Keegan Bradley and Francesco Molinari. That's pretty good company!

That's quite an endorsement for CB as a links venue

Another nice article on JG's US Open appearance. Having a good attitude goes a long way!
