A question for the Irish contingent...
« on: March 11, 2015, 06:20:43 AM »
If you were visiting Portmarnock and the Island one day and Co. Louth the next, where would you stay the night and eat dinner? Doesn't need to be fancy or expensive, just nice, personal and with a local feel.

I'd most certainly stay in the village of Malahide which is all of the above... Although I've never had reason to search out accommodation there so I'd be shooting almost as blind as you on that one, Adam...

There is a great dormy house at County Louth, which is very cheap and the food is great... only downside is the trickle that is the shower... but I would seriously consider it... great vibe in the evening... the locals roll up for the food and it's very relaxed.

Agree with Ally.  Stay at the Grand Hotel in Malahide. Right in the middle of town, looking directly across the estuary at The Island.
Malahide is a fantastic village with loads of dining and drinking options.

I've only ever had lunch or dinner there, but my parents love the Grand.  They're visiting Dublin for a wedding just now, and planned on staying there but the logistics didn't work out.

My boys and I stayed in both County Louth and the Grand Hotel on a recent trip to Dublin. I agree, the hotel, the setting, and the village are great. I enjoyed my stay there very much. But if Adam is playing 36 and then County Louth the next day, he really only needs a place to eat and sleep that night. The rooms are County Louth are quite modest, but I loved the convenience of rolling out of bed and walking to the first tee.

I've stayed at the Grand in Malahide on two trips and its perfect.  I've only visited County Louth but by the looks of it the club's Dormy house, if open to visitors, would work quite well.  Very nice clubhouse.

I would second Greg T's opinion on the food at County Louth. The dinners I have had there have been fantastic. Service was terrific as well.

Adam,

It really depends on how you like to do things. I tend to like to be close to my next round of golf so I personally tend to drive after golf so as to have a relaxing start to the next day.

If you are flying into Dublin in the A.M and then playing Portmarnock and then The Island I would personally suggest moving on up to County Louth, having dinner and staying there. Like I said, the dinners I have had there have been fantastic. In fact, every time I am there in the afternoon I stay for dinner. Back tracking to Malahide and then making the drive up to County Louth the next day is a bit much for me personally. The 20-25mins it might take to get to Malahide would be about half the time it would take to get up to County Louth. So I would just do the extra 25 mins and save a 50 min drive the next morning.

Malahide is a very cool place to spend time though. Very cool place.

Hope this helps.

I would stay at County Louth. The road up the east coast is so much better and faster than it used to be, so the logistics are pretty easy. If you want to stay down near Portmarncok, the Portmarnock Hotel is nice and has a fine Bernhard Langer links of its own.

You can't go too far wrong with either option.

Given that you're playing Portmarnock and The Island in the same day, if in that order, I'd stay at the Waterside. the closest Hotel to The Island.
I stayed there last summer and it was perfectly fine.
Hard to imagine you'd be doing a whole lot that evening after 36 anyway.

Pretty sure that's where I stayed two nights. It's about 5 minutes from the Island right on the water. It was a nice place.
