Mystery Photo - Beating Pete Dye to the Punch

I stumbled across this photo of a course included in the Dec. 1904 issue of Golf Magazine.

The similarities to more modern work were striking.

Any ideas as to what course this was?

Wow, pretty unnatural!   Reminds me of two platform tees built over the mangrove swamp at the Ocean Reef Club on Key Largo.  Equally unnatural but existing modern.

Now is that Diegel putting?!  As that chap putting is "a'diegeling"

I have no idea what course this is.  The label for the photo was probably cut off in the digital version of the magazine.  All of the old Golf Magazines have a photo before the masthead that has something to do with an article later in the magazine.  I tried to figure this one out, but to no avail.

Diegel was born in 1899 so that wasn't him in the 1904 picture. Late in his career, after an injury, Leo Diegel was head pro at Philmont CC in the Philly 'burbs:

that is clearly Colt's original version of the 18th at the West Course, Wentworth now so lovingly restored by Mr. Els ;D

I know I'll get beat to the punch (probably already have been) but that is the worst iteration of ANGC's 8th ever conceived.  Perhaps the silliest green I've ever seen on a great course.

Sven and Jon,  been thinking, but unfortunately I have no basis and depth of knowledge of Colt or Wentworth or too much of the English chronology to get anywhere thinking.  Looking forward to the big reveal, if the implication is Wentworth so clearly as Jon observes.   ;) ;D
