One of the great things about GCA.com are the photo tours and course profiles. Often, if favourable, these do a great job of marketing the course in question, far better than the Club's actual website does.

From an architecture point of view, which club websites that you've seen do the best job in terms of photography, copy and details and information on the architect?

Joe- not the intent of the thread- but what a gorgeous photo tour.  And what an exquisite golf course.  Huge regret that I didn't discover this website until 2009- and never knew Beechtree existed until it was too late. Your tour is so good that I miss this course terribly.

Most courses in the UK/ireland have wonderful informative websites with links to tee time, visitor info and pictures of each hole as the player sees them. Many times I arrive at a new course and feel like I've played it already (in a good way )
Most US websites are garbage with views of fountains, across to other holes, or the clubhouse, and often are only viewable if a member

Especially in these more competitive economic times, I can't understand any club, private or commercial, not having a quality website - unless that is they are deliberately trying to keep folk away or have little money to create and manage one.

Course photos are a key aspect, so quality photos are essential. Bad photos are off-putting. Any historical or architectural etc details are nice to have as well and recording them on the website at least means such details ought not be forgotten.

Am I correct in believing that there are 'standard packages' for golf club websites that can be bought into as numerous club sites, at least in GB, seem to follow the same style?

In the UK, golf club network, intelligent golf and club systems are the big players but they can look samey. Our provider you've actually highlighted on here a few times - Burnham and Minch Old, but as he becomes more popular, everyone in the area becomes to look the same.

I think commercial video and flyovers is probably the way to go and not that expensive anymore. You're right about photography though and some of the guys on here are in the wrong job. I'd hire Sean to do the pictures and copy but he'd probably vomit at all the trees.

Ryan - I have a drone you can borrow it in the summer.
Phil Inglis is a great photographer and lives our way, Corsham. He might be £1000, possibly a bit less but he would do some great super early summer shots or late evening ones. That aside I think yours are pretty good anyway.
Sean should be making a living out of golf, maybe his own web site with tours and the club pay him say £500 - £600 to upload it.

It states as guide lines for the first tee shot "Favour the right side of the fairway for an easier second shot"

Excuse me! Have you stood on that first tee? I don't mind how much of the local produce I have consumed, I am not aiming right!

Here are a couple of other thoughts -

One thing that peeves me on club websites is the club diary for the next few days-week-month. Too many clubs hide this in the 'Member' restricted area. Wrong.

Have it accessible to all. This way if I want to play say next Fri as a visitor I can check myself online whether some fixture, match etc is being played on said Fri and can then decide myself, without 'phoning up and talking to the proshop, whether to play there or to try somewhere else.

On-line entry for Open Comp is a good feature, no more form printing, filling-in, posting and then the have-I-got-in and if so what teetime period.

I like to see the opening page of the website have very high quality photos, and several of them, big ones as well, and photos that change/move quickly to the next photo. Change quickly, not slowly. They make me want to delve deeper into the site.

There are other points I'm sure too but these'll do for now!

Hardly any even say if the course is open, closed, some make it so hard to find out what it costs to play it is quite bizzarre.

Hiding the diary is another weird one. Online tee times essential.

I think 5 years ago 20% of our business was online now its more like 80%.

I agree pictures are important and the bigger the better.

but that's EXACTLY what most US private clubs websites are like-useless other than directions

the UK/Irish private club websites have sooooooo much more information-links to lodging, tee time, pictures of each hole etc.

Of course they at least have websites-we don't
