Ross Retreat 2014
« on: December 05, 2014, 07:50:01 AM »
I am headed to Pinehurst with members of Carolina Golf Club for our annual Ross Retreat!  This is where we gather at the Pine Crest Inn for dinner, drinks, and camaraderie while enjoying Donald's best courses in the area not named #2.  Today we are playing Southern Pines, tomorrow Mid Pines (fingers crossed on weather), and we cap this year's event with Pine Needles Sunday morning.

With #2 being what it is (Donald's finest test of championship golf), where are some other places folks can gather and enjoy three wonderfully designed layouts by the same architect, that are simultaneously challenging and fun to play, all within what seems a drive and a wedge from one another?

I'll bet Roger wants to return to the Dormie Club to see if he can recreate the spectacular eagle he made at #6 a few years ago!

Public-wise?  Very few....maybe Whistling Straits when the upcoming course is built?  WS/Blackwolf are four Dye courses now, but 20 mins from each other.

Somehow George Wright/Franklin Park/Newton Commonwealth in Boston does not have quite the same ring to it as #2/PN/SP...but they are fun too in their own ways.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Depending on how much credit Mike Strantz deserves for what currently exists at Heritage Club in Pawleys Island, SC, it's about as "next-door" to his Caledonia and True Blue as possible.

It won't surprise me to see at least ten parallel suggestions. I'll do my best to come up with a few.

Plonk yourself in Surrey and you can play any number of wonderful Colt courses very easily.

You could probably play Tilly's Winged Foot, Quaker Ridge and Fenway without ever picking up your ball.

I suspect that the public-access element is important here.

Ah. So Tilly and his Westchester superfecta probably don't work then.

From a perspective of quality golf for the price your trip is probably impossible to beat.  I have done it twice.

Bethpage Black & Red courses, the redesigned and re-routed Green course, all Tilly 1934-36 with his original 1935 Blue course split with 11 holes in the Yellow and the other 7 the new Blue although many of the original features were done away with when Tull created the two courses from the one in 1956. All played from the same clubhouse.

In addition, the Black, Red & Blue courses all hosted USGA Championships making Bethpage nearly singular in that regard as well.

The golfiest place I know!   Love the porch, the bar, the fireplace, the blue haired cougars at the piano bar.....

Sadly your weather today was not so hot, but playable. Hard rain didn't hit until 4ish. Tomorrow likely to be chilly!

I guess I don't get the Pine Crest Inn thing.

The bar area is too small, the hearth area is too small, the drinks are expensive (even for Pinehurst) and it adds up to abuse of clientele for me.

Ronald

I too think the Pinecrest is not all its cracked up to be.  Its not bad, but honestly, I prefer Southern Pines as the base.  Its a proper little town.  Last time in the area we had a very good deal with hotel and golf.  I think we paid $180 for Mid Pines, Dormie and hotel in October.  The hotel was plastic (short cab ride from town), but if I was staying for more than a night I would check into the Jefferson.

I reckon a good Fowler trip could be had just by stopping in at Walton Heath and Berkshire.  One night, four rounds, wham bam thank you ma'am

Haven't stayed at Pine Crest, but I would stay at Pine Needles in a heart beat.  Perfect place for me, great Bar, great rooms.  You need to go to Maxies for Drinks.

The bar at pine needles is the coolest I've been to in the States. It's just perfect.

agree completely.

Side note to craft beer lovers golfing in NC today.  Buy a 6er of Mother Earth ''Oatmeal Porter"

Wow.  I didn't care for the bar at all.  A real 70s throwback.  At least there isn't a drop ceiling...is there?
